A method and apparatus for near vertical laying of a pipeline offshore by a pipe laying vessel includes a tower to which is attached a strongback that load pipe sections from a supply point on the vessel into the tower where the lower end of the pipe section is welded onto the upper end of a pipe line that extends into the sea while the strongback returns to the supply point for a second pipe joint. Where the pipe section includes a bulky item such as a valve assembly box, after the pipe section has been welded to the pipeline the pipe section is moved generally horizontally out of the tower and a hoisting cable lowers the pipe section to a predetermined depth below the tower. The hoisting cable then returns the pipe section and attached pipeline to their original position.

Underwater pipe laying method and apparatus

A tensioner, for clamping cables, flexible pipes or bars and moving them forwards in a controlled manner, includes at least two conveyors, each intended to displace one or more clamping members. The conveyors each attached to a main frame element. A selective number of the conveyors can be combined using standard connection elements.

Tensioner

A method for laying a pipeline on a surface located under water such as a deep sea bed. The pipeline is held fixedly by tensioners having tensioning elements each extending between a clamping member engaging on the pipeline and a support member connected to a vessel. Tensioning is accomplished by sets of endless clamping bands which apply a braking action to the pipeline. A set of clamping jaws is clamped fixedly to the pipeline and moves along with the pipeline from a starting position to a releasing position. As a set of clamping jaws is clamped to the pipeline, another set of clamping jaws is released from the pipeline and returned to a starting position to continually repeat the cycle of holding and releasing of the pipeline.
