A satellite communication system includes a non-geostationary satellite configured to provide a first plurality of non-articulated spot beams that comprise a Field of Regard. The satellite further configured to provide a steerable spot beam that can be steered to establish communication with a gateway outside and in front of the Field of Regard and maintain communication while the satellite and the Field of Regard moves over and past the gateway including after the gateway is outside of and behind the Field of Regard.

Synchronization technology is implemented for a satellite communication system. Master clock information is accessed at a terrestrial location. A timing message based on the master clock information is transmitted from the terrestrial location to a satellite as the satellite is in orbit. The satellite is synchronized to the master clock based on the timing message. A beacon signal is transmitted from the satellite toward Earth. The beacon signal includes timing information. The beacon signal is received at a ground based gateway. The gateway is synchronized to the satellite based on the beacon signal. Communication is sent from the gateway to a terminal via the satellite. The communication includes timing data. The terminal is synchronized to the gateway based on the timing data.

Synchronization for satellite system

A satellite communication system provides for handovers between satellites and multiple gateways. Terminals communicate with a first gateway via a first satellite as beams of the first satellite traverse the region. A second gateway is in communication with the first satellite and hands over to a second satellite. The first gateway is at a first location. The second gateway is at a second location separated from the first location in the orbital direction. Terminals handover to the second satellite as beams of the second satellite begin to traverse the region, and the terminals start connecting to and communicating with the second gateway via the second satellite. After all of the terminals of the plurality of terminals handover to the second satellite, the first gateway hands over to the second satellite and then the terminals in the region communicate with the first gateway via the second satellite.

A satellite communication system includes a satellite configured to provide a first plurality of spot beams adapted for communication with subscriber terminals using time domain beam hopping and a second plurality of spot beams adapted for communication with gateways. The satellite includes a spectrum routing network that is configured to time multiplex spot beams of the second plurality of spot beams with spot beams of the first plurality of spot beams so that a spot beam that is implementing beam hopping for communication to subscriber terminals communicates with different feeder beams (and, therefore, different gateways) at different times during a hopping period.

A constellation of non-geosynchronous satellites are in a common orbit. Each time one of the satellites is at a trigger location, a new rolling wave of handovers is started that includes performing handovers of a group of dependent spot beams between adjacent satellites in sequence for pairs of adjacent satellites in a single direction around the orbit.

A satellite communications system provides for handovers between spot beams, including communicating (at a ground based terminal) with a non-geostationary satellite constellation using a first spot beam of the non-geostationary satellite constellation and a first beam hopping plan. The ground based terminal changes the communicating with the non-geostationary satellite constellation to use a second spot beam of the non-geostationary satellite constellation and a second beam hopping plan.

A satellite communication system comprises one or more non-geostationary satellites. Each satellite is configured to provide a plurality of spot beams using time domain beam hopping among the spot beams. The spot beams are divided into hopping groups and each satellite is configured to switch throughput and power among spot beams in a same hopping group at intervals of an epoch over a hopping period according to a hopping plan. Each satellite is configured to receive, change and implement the hopping plan in orbit while the satellite moves in relation to a fixed geographic coverage region. The satellites are programmable to assign any combination of epochs in a hopping plan among spot beams of a same hopping group and to route throughput between spot beams.

Interference information is obtained from one or more interference information sources external to a particular communication system, wherein the interference information is indicative of non-weather related interference that can adversely affect efficacy of the particular communication system. Configurable link parameters of the particular communication system are dynamically adapted and/or resources of the particular communication system are dynamically allocated based on the interference information obtained from the interference information source(s) that is/are external to the particular communication system. Such embodiments can advantageously be performed proactively to prevent or mitigate adverse effects of non-weather related interference on the efficacy of the particular communication system.

Dynamic link adaption and/or dynamic allocation of communication resources of a communication system based on external interference information received from external interference information sources

Present location information about a present location of a mobile terminal is obtained, as is destination information about a target destination for the mobile terminal, wherein the target destination can be a waypoint destination or a final destination for the mobile terminal. Also obtained is wireless communication coverage information about wireless communication coverage associated with one or more geographic regions between the present location of the mobile terminal and the target destination for the mobile terminal. In dependence on the wireless communication coverage information, a navigational route is determined for the mobile terminal that mitigates a probability that the mobile terminal will lose a specific type of communication capability while travelling between the present location of the mobile terminal and the target destination for the mobile terminal.
