Disclosed herein is an implantable medical device including an antimicrobial layer. The antimicrobial layer may include a first distinct size of silver nanoparticles, a second distinct size of silver nanoparticles, and a third distinct size of silver nanoparticles. The antimicrobial layer extends over a surface of the implantable medical device, and, in some instances, the surface of the implantable medical device may serve as a substrate on which the antimicrobial layer is deposited.

Tachyarrhythmia is treated by applying anti-tachycardia pacing through at least one multi-site electrode set located on, in or around the heart. The electrode set is arranged and located such that an electrical activation pattern having a wave-front between substantially flat and concave is generated through a reentrant circuit associated with the tachyarrhythmia. The electrode set may be one of a plurality of predefined, multi-site electrode sets located on, in or around the atria. Alternatively, the electrode set may be formed using at least two selectable electrodes located on, in or around the atria.

A load detection assembly is provided on the lead body, wherein the load detection assembly includes a housing that holds a sensor and a load transfer element. The load transfer element engages the sensor and conveys a force induced on the load transfer element to the sensor. Optionally, the housing may isolate the sensor from lateral forces and the load transfer element may only convey, to the sensor, longitudinal forces that are directed in a predetermined single direction. For example, the load transfer element may only convey, to the sensor, longitudinal forces that are directed perpendicular to a surface of the sensor.

The implantable device is capable of performing thermal dilution analysis of the cardiac output of a patient using power delivered from an external source. By using power from an external source, the implantable device conserves its power resources for other purposes, such as for pacing or defibrillation therapy. In one example, an external programmer or bedside monitor provides power through a hand-held power delivery wand via electromagnetic induction, with the power routed from a subcutaneous coil to a heating element implanted in the right atrium, which heats blood as it passes through the right atrium. In another example, the heating element is formed of a material that generates heat in response to a beam of ultrasound provided by the wand. In either case, a downstream blood temperature profile is detected using a thermistor implanted in the pulmonary artery and cardiac output is then estimated by analyzing the temperature profile.

An apparatus for and method of measuring pressure through a septum in a patient's heart is disclosed. A lead inserted into the right side of a heart is routed through the septum to gain access to the left side of the heart. The lead includes an attachment structure that secures the lead to one or both of the septal walls. The attachment structure may include at least one protruding tine, membrane, inflatable balloon, involuted spiral or J-lead that engage one or more sides of the septum. The lead also includes one or more sensors for measuring cardiac pressure on the left side of the heart and, as necessary, the right side of the heart.

Trans-septal intra-cardiac lead system

A body fluid pressure sensor module according to the invention comprises a housing having a first end and a second end and enclosing a pressure sensor. The pressure sensor is electrically coupled to a plurality of electrical conductors extending into the housing through a feedthrough disposed within, and hermetically sealing, the first end of the housing. The housing defines a chamber disposed between the feedthrough and the second end of the housing. The chamber contains a material in communication with the pressure sensor, the material being capable of transmitting pressure variations to the pressure sensor. The plurality of electrical conductors have ends within the housing, and the pressure sensor is mounted on the end of at least one of the conductors. Also disclosed are medical leads incorporating the pressure sensor module, and methods for fabricating the modules. The pressure sensor module is compact, and particularly so where cable conductors are utilized and the sensor is directly mounted on at least one of the cable conductors. The compactness of a pressure sensor module pursuant to the invention facilitates its incorporation into a small diameter, flexible medical lead enhancing its placement within a patient's body, for example, within the left atrium of the heart.
