Coated cemented carbide inserts are particularly useful for wet or dry milling steels. The inserts are formed by a cemented carbide body including WC, NbC and a W-alloyed Co binder phase, and a coating including an innermost layer of TiCNO, with equiaxed grains, a layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains and a layer of &#x3b1;-AlO.

Coated cutting insert for milling applications

A coated cemented carbide insert is particularly useful for wet or dry milling steels at high cutting speeds, milling of hardened steels, and high feed copy milling of tool steels. A coated sintered cemented carbide body includes a cemented carbide body, a first layer adjacent the cemented carbide body, the first layer including Ti(C,N) and having a thickness of from about 3 to about 20 &mgr;m, an alumina layer adjacent said first layer, the alumina layer including &agr;-Al O or &kgr;-Al O and having a thickness of from about 1 to about 15 &mgr;m, and a further layer adjacent the aluminum layer of a carbide, carbonitride or carboxynitride of one or more of Ti, Zr and Hf, the further layer having a thickness of from about 1 to 15 &mgr;m. A friction-reducing layer, including one or more of &ggr;-Al O , &kgr;-A1 O and nanocrystalline Ti(C,N) and having a thickness of from about 1 to about 5 &mgr;m, can be adjacent to the further layer. A method to cut steel with a sintered cemented carbide body where the alumina is &agr;-Al O and a method to cut cast iron with a sintered cemented carbide body where the alumina is &agr;-Al O .

The present invention relates to cutting tool insert consisting of a tungsten carbide based hard metal substrate and a coating. The hard metal consists of about 4-15 wt-% binder phase with face centered cubic structure and a composition of 35-65 wt-% Fe and 35-65 wt-% Ni in addition to dissolved elements. As a result, inserts have been produced with at least as good performance in machining as conventional state-of-the-art inserts with Co-based binder phase. The insert can be applied in milling and turning of low and medium alloyed steels as well as stainless steels.
