A transducer device for detecting an environmental state within a biological material including a channel comprising a fluid, a hydrogel material, which is adapted to change its volume when getting into contact with an environmental material and/or when detecting an environmental change, and which is mechanically coupled to the channel such that the volume of the channel changes when the volume of the hydrogel material changes. The transducer device further includes a sensor, which is adapted to generate a signal upon detection of the change of a physical property of the fluid that is induced by the volume change of the channel. By applying the transducer device, an accurate monitoring of physiological parameters, for which the hydrogel material is sensitive is possible. It is also possible to apply the transducer device outside of the bodily lumen, for example to monitor the blood of a patient outside the bodily lumen.

Hydrogel based device for detecting an environmental state

A hydrogen storage material has a magnesium-containing intermetallic compound which can form a hydride with hydrogen. The intermetallic compound has an alloy of magnesium and a trivalent metal selected from the group of Sc, Y, La and the rare earth elements. The hydrogen storage material can further have a catalytically active material.

The invention relates to a switching mirror display having an increased aperture. The display comprises pixel elements ( ) having a switchable layer ( ), which is switched between a reflecting and an absorbing state by changing a hydrogen content of the switchable layer ( ). Applying a DC voltage on electroconductive layers ( ) changes the hydrogen content. These electroconductive layers ( ) sandwich a stack of layers comprising the switchable layer ( ), which stack has been deposited on a transparent substrate ( ). The display is being viewed from a side ( ) of the substrate on which the stack is deposited. The pixel element ( ) is driven by an active matrix element ( ). The switchable layer ( ) extends across the active matrix element ( ) and conceals this element. This increases the aperture of the display.

Switching display device having a large aperture

A matrix display ( ) comprises pixels based on switching elements ( ) which comprise a switchable layer which can be switched from one chemical state to another, the optical properties of said chemical states being different. Voltage-limiting devices ( ) preventing pixel degradation are arranged on the switching elements ( ).

Light-switching device

A description is given of a switching device ( ) comprising a transparent substrate ( ), a switching film ( ) comprising a hydride of scandium and magnesium, covered with a palladium layer ( ). By exchange of hydrogen, the switching film can be reversibly switched from a transparent state to a mirror-like state with zero transmission via an intermediate black absorbing state. The conversion between both states is reversible, and this phenomenon can be used, for example, in an optical switching element or sun roof.

Optical switching device

The invention relates to a switching device having shorter switching times. The device comprises a switchable layer ( ), which is switched between a reflecting and an absorbing state by changing a hydrogen content of the switchable layer ( ). Applying a DC voltage on electroconductive layers ( ) changes the hydrogen content. These electroconductive layers ( ) sandwich a stack of layers comprising the switchable layer ( ) and a hydrogen storage layer ( ). The hydrogen storage layer comprises essentially the same compounds as the switchable layer ( ), viz. LMgH and preferably GdMgH . The storage layer may be made thin, leading to relatively short hydrogen transportation times and a relatively fast display. The device may be further improved by applying a scattering foil.
