An abrasive article comprises a porous substrate having openings extending through the porous substrate between first and second opposed major surfaces. An abrasive coating is disposed on only a portion of a first major surface of the porous substrate. The abrasive coating comprises a functional layer disposed on only a portion of a first major surface of the porous substrate, a make layer disposed on at least a portion of the functional layer opposite the porous substrate, and abrasive particles. The functional layer and the make layer independently comprise chemically crosslinked binders. The functional layer fully occludes a first portion the openings and does not fully occlude a second portion of the openings, which permits passage of abraded swarf through the abrasive article. Methods of making the abrasive article are also disclosed.

Methods and apparatuses for roll coating are provided. The roll coating system () includes a coating roll () having a deformable inner layer () with a surface thereof covered by a deformable outer layer (), the inner layer being softer than the outer layer. A substrate () is conveyed to the nip () between the coating roll and a back-up roll (). A metered coating material is transferred from the coating roll to a patterned surface structure () of the substrate at the nip to form a conformal coating on the patterned structure of the substrate.

At least some of the retroreflective elements include a reflective layer that is embedded between the transparent microsphere and the binder layer. Diagnostic devices for quantitative or qualitative analysis of a sample fluid including an analyte include at least two portions made from a hydrophilic material. The planar portions are stacked on each other and each occupy a different and substantially parallel plane to form a three-dimensional structure. At least one of the planar portions includes a hydrophobic region formed by applying a low surface energy material that extends through a thickness of the substrate portion from a first major surface to a second major surface thereof. The hydrophilic regions in the overlying substantially parallel substrate portions can be aligned with each other such that a fluid is passively transported between adjacent hydrophilic regions to provide a sample flow path between adjacent substrate portions.

A curable mixture, a partially cured composition, a cured composition, an article containing either the partially cured composition or the cured composition, and a method of bonding two substrates are provided. The partially cured composition functions as a pressure-sensitive adhesive while the cured composition functions as a structural or semi-structural adhesive. The curable mixture can be applied to a first substrate by printing or dispensing, if desired.

A via is in a second portion of the second region of the conductive surface between an edge of the patterned layer of the low surface energy material and the overcoat layer. A conductive material is in the via to provide an electrical connection to the conductive surface.

The conductive layer comprises a conductive surface, and there is a patterned layer on at least a portion of a first region of the conductive surface. The patterned layer comprises a conductive material having a surface roughness, and is in electrical contact with the conductive surface. An overcoat layer is present on at least a portion of the first region, such that the overcoat layer has a thickness less than the surface roughness, such that the conductive layer within the first region is covered by the overcoat layer, and such that at least a portion of the patterned layer substantially protrudes above the overcoat layer. The protruding portion permits electrical contact with the patterned layer, and via the conductive layer to other parts of the patterned layer and/or electrically conductive connectors to external electronic devices. Methods for forming the composite article are also disclosed. Methods of making such composite articles are also disclosed.

Useful non-uniformly patterned coated articles can be prepared using the process.
