The reduction in the sol-gel temperature of aqueous poloxamer surfactant compositions by the addition of hydrophobic vicinal diols is provided. Lowering of the sol-gel temperature and the gelling efficiency of water-soluble poloxamer block copolymers of polyethylene oxide-b-polypropylene oxide-b-polyethylene oxide has been markedly improved by the addition of small amounts of at least one hydrophobic vicinal diol, such as monoalkyl glycols, monoalkyl glycerols, or monoacyl glycerols. The decrease in the sol-gel temperature facilitates gel formation, and such gels exhibit greater residence time on a surface, particularly those with biological properties.

Antimicrobial polymer coating formulations are prepared that protect biological surfaces by treating, reducing, ameliorating, preventing or inhibiting pathogenic microorganism ingress to a human or animal host, reducing the potential for infection, particularly by necrotizing fasciitis originating microorganisms, through use of a polymer coating barrier containing antimicrobial agents that facilitates sustained release of biocidal agents active against such opportunistic microorganisms. Such formulations are effective for inhibiting microbial ingress pertaining to soft tissue and skin tears, abrasions, punctures and surgical wounds, and can be used as in water environments and as a skin protectant sunscreen and insect repellent.

This invention relates generally to water-insoluble but water-swellable and deformable crosslinked PEGylated microgel particles of proteins and protein-based macromolecules that are pseudoplastic (shear thinning) and flow in aqueous media under shear and which can be injected or made to flow, wherein said microgel particles can reform as a cluster of microgel particles when shearing forces are removed. The microgel particles function as a matrix to support cell growth, viability, and proliferation.

A treatment for pruritus is described that is based upon amylase. The amylases (&#x3b1;-, &#x3b2;-, &#x3b3;-amylase) are noted for the cleavage of the &#x3b1;-glycosidic bonds of polysaccharides, yielding lower molecular weight carbohydrate/sugar fragments. It has now been found that &#x3b1;-amylase is effective in the reduction of pruritus (itching) of affected tissue.

It has now been found that &#x3b1;-amylase is effective in the debridement of devitalized tissue.

The present invention relates to amphiphilic pressure sensitive adhesives, specifically, pressure sensitive adhesives with amphiphilic copolymers which improve adhesion under moist environment. A composition and method adapted for delivery of hydrophilic, biologically-active agents are disclosed. The composition can include a reverse microemulsion formed from at least one hydrophilic, biologically-active agent solubilized by a hydrophobic reverse emulsion surfactant in a non-stinging, volatile, hydrophobic solvent. The non-stinging, volatile, hydrophobic solvent is selected from the group consisting of volatile linear and cyclic siloxanes, volatile linear, branched, and cyclic alkanes, volatile fluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons, liquid carbon dioxide under pressure, and combinations thereof. The reverse microemulsion can be an optically clear solution.

Delivery of biologically-active agents using volatile, hydrophobic solvents

An antimicrobial composition with synergistic biocidal activity is described which comprises at least one antimicrobial polymeric biguanide and at least one antimicrobial vicinal diol, said vicinal diol comprises at least one monoalkyl glycol, monoalkyl glycerol, or monoacyl glycerol, to diminish or eliminate biofilm communities. Such synergistic interaction is effective in wound treatment, particularly for chronic wounds, burns and battlefield-induced wounds, as well as for disinfecting non-biological surfaces. The antimicrobial composition can also be prepared as viscous solutions or as gels. The antimicrobial composition may be added to a substrate and dried, such as to a catheter, or to a foam, or to a fiber wound dressing, or coated as a viscous solution or gel upon such devices, to provide controlled release antimicrobial activity.

A biological coating material that includes a polymerizable polyacrylate monomer; a volatile liquid; a polymer selected from a synthetic rubber, a natural rubber, and a thermoplastic elastomer. The biological liquid coating material forms a coating or bandage in the form of a film that when applied and adhered to a surface or to the skin of a user inhibits the application surface from adhering to another surface.

Combinations of solubilized, covalently crosslinked, siloxy-containing polymers in a solvent system of a volatile hydrophobic (non-polar) liquid that is non-stinging to a user are excellent non-irritating liquid coating materials for forming films, which, after solvent evaporation, are water insoluble but water-vapor permeable and lightly adherent to surfaces such as skin and mucous membranes. The crosslinking content is greater than 1 weight % and can be as much as 16 weight %. In comparison to non-crosslinked polysiloxy films, or crosslinked films of 1 weight % or less, the enhanced crosslinked polysiloxy films, while continuing to be soluble in the solvent, have reduced tack and reduced adhesion to skin and can act as sacrificial coatings under strongly adherent pressure sensitive adhesives.
