A web server configured to respond to client requests over a network such as the World Wide Web includes a web listener having a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) daemon, a plurality of extension programs configured to perform respective operations, and a web request broker configured to identify one of the programs for responding to a client request, and determine the availability of an instance of the identified program. The web request broker maintains control of multiple instances of each server extension program to provide enhanced server operation without overwhelming server resources. The web request broker maintains a minimum number of instances of the identified program in memory, each executed in its own address space. The web request broker determines whether an available instance of the identified program is available from an existing number of instances, and selectively initiates a new instance of the program if no other instance is available. If no instance is available and the existing number of instances exceeds the maximum prescribed number, then the web request broker returns the reply to the web listener to send a reply over the network that the request was not processed.

Web request broker controlling multiple processes

A system, method, and computer readable-medium for performing operations associated with browser requests are provided. The system includes a plurality of dispatchers coupled to a plurality of web listeners. Each of the dispatchers receives from a corresponding web listener browser requests received by the corresponding web listener. The system further includes a virtual path manager and a resource manager. The virtual path manager is coupled to the dispatchers through an inter-machine communication mechanism. The virtual path manager indicates to the dispatchers which of a cartridges is associated with the browser requests. The resource manager is coupled to the dispatchers through the inter-machine communication mechanism. The resource manager is configured to assign to each dispatcher of the dispatchers an instance of a cartridge of the cartridges in response to receiving a request for an instance from the dispatcher. The dispatchers are configured to send messages through the inter-machine communication mechanism to the instances that are assigned by the resource manager to the dispatchers. The messages cause the instances to perform the operations associated with the browser requests.

Method and apparatus for handling client request with a distributed web application server

An object oriented interactive application interface for facilitating application program development in a networked computer system providing on-line services is disclosed. The present invention is an Interactive Application Object module (IAO), comprising a client side portion and a server side portion, that facilitates the development of client applications for interaction with a server across a network. The IAO comprises a set of software objects that include interfaces and methods for implementing a client on-line service application at a high abstraction layer. The IAO provides high level objects for use by a client application for handling a large set of interactive system and business functions. On the client device, the IAO insulates the client application from the implementation details of a particular low level network interface. On the server side, the IAO integrates the a media server functionality and a services module with a conventional robust relational database and a conventional text server for persistent storage and retrieval of user system and business information. The application interface of the present invention comprises, 1) a client application interface for receiving requests from a client application, 2) a network interface for sending and receiving messages related to the client application requests via the network, 3) a database interface for storing and querying information related to the client application requests, and 4) an on-line service interface for interacting with a particular network accessible service having a specific service protocol, the service having resources necessary to respond to the client application requests.
