A display based keyboard is described herein. The display based keyboard includes a bi-stable segmented-based display, a master controller, and a display driver. The bi-stable segmented-based display may include a front barrier layer, a top plane layer, a display technology specific layer, a back plane layer, and a rear barrier layer.

Systems and methods for converting multi-focus image data into a compressed video format. Multi-focus image data of a scene may be sampled to generate a stack of images spanning multiple focal depths. Each image focal distance is mapped to a time stamp and a video encoder is employed to generate a compressed video stream of scene information. In further embodiments, the video encoded scene information is decoded and frames from the stream selected for display based on the focal distance-time stamp mapping. In further embodiments, multi-focus video data is encoded with consecutive frames spanning different focal distances defining a Group of Pictures (GOP), and/or spanning different hierarchical layers.

Multi-focus image data compression

Techniques are provided for tracking objects in an encoded video stream based on data directly extracted from the video stream, thus eliminating any need for the stream to be fully or partially decoded. Extracted motion vector and DC coefficient data can be used to provide a rough estimation of which macro-blocks are be associated with a background motion model and which macro-blocks correspond to a foreground object which is moving with respect to the background motion model. Macro-blocks which are associated with a moving foreground object can be grouped based on connectivity and a similarity measure derived from the extracted DC coefficient data. The grouped macro-blocks can be tracked from frame to frame to identify and eliminate groups having only negligible motion. The resulting validated macro-block groups will correspond to a rough object mask associated with a moving region in the analyzed frame.
