A method for operating an internal combustion engine comprising an emission control system that includes at least one catalytic and/or filter-effective emission control component. In conjunction with a cold start and/or a warm-up of the internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine is operated using a cold start engine operation process having predefined values for predefined operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. An amount of hydrocarbons (HC) stored in one or more of the at least one emission control component is estimated, and the cold start engine operation process is activated when the estimation indicates that the amount of stored HC exceeds a predefined maximum amount of stored HC.

Method for operating an internal combustion engine with an emission control system

In a method for reducing the emission of nitrogen dioxide in a motor vehicle having an exhaust gas purification system having an SCR catalytic converter with adsorption centers for nitrogen oxides, an exhaust gas enriched with ammonia is supplied to the SCR catalytic converter above an operating temperature. Below the operating temperature, the exhaust gas supplied to the SCR catalytic converter is enriched with a material such that an adsorption of nitrogen oxides is inhibited at corresponding adsorption centers of the SCR catalytic converter. In order to reduce the overall NOemissions below a first, predeterminable amount, an exhaust gas enriched with ammonia is supplied to the SCR catalytic converter and the NOportion of the total NOemissions is reduced below a second, predeterminable amount in that NOis converted with hydrocarbons stored in the SCR catalytic converter.

Method for reducing emission of nitrogen oxide in a motor vehicle having a lean burning internal combustion engine

A method for operating an internal combustion engine comprising an exhaust gas cleaning system that includes a SCR catalyst. In conjunction with a cold start and/or a warm-up of the internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine is operated using a cold start engine operation method having predefineable values for predefineable operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. An amount of nitrogen oxides stored in the SCR catalyst is estimated, and the cold start engine operation method is activated when the estimation indicates that the nitrogen oxide storage amount exceeds a predefineable nitrogen oxide storage amount limit value.
