In a wireless communications network, the presence of a wireless local area network in a cell segment is determined. An identifier of the wireless local area network in the cell segment is sent to at least one mobile station in the cell segment to enable the at least one mobile station to hand off to the wireless local area network. Optionally, information identifying geographic boundaries of cell segments and the wireless local area network can be sent to the at least one mobile station.

Sending an identifier of a wireless local area network to enable handoff of a mobile station to the wireless local area network

A packet-switched wireless communications network includes a mobile station and a radio network controller that are able to establish a radio connection therebetween. Messages are exchanges over one or more traffic channels to establish a packet-switched services session between the mobile station and the radio network controller. The radio connection is not closed until all messages for establishing the packet-switched services session have been exchanged between the mobile station and the radio network controller.

Establishing a session in a packet switched wireless communications network

A system and non-transitory computer storage medium storing a computer program for delivering messages to a wireless access terminal are provided. A messaging center is in communication with a 1xEV-DO network. The messaging center is arranged to receive a message having a telephone number as a destination address for delivery to the wireless access terminal. The messaging center has a storage device and a central processing unit. The storage device stores a mapping between the telephone number, a mobile static identifier corresponding to a user of the wireless access terminal and a destination address corresponding to an IP address of the wireless access terminal in the 1xEV-DO network. The central processing unit is in communication with the storage device. The mapping between the telephone number and the IP address is based on a correspondence between the telephone number and the mobile static identifier. The mapping is evaluated to determine the IP address of the wireless access terminal in the 1xEV-DO network and the message is transmitted to the wireless access terminal using the 1xEV-DO network.

Method and system for wireless network-based messaging service message delivery

A method and system including messaging center connectable to a first communication network and a second communication network. The messaging center is arranged to receive a message having a destination address based on the first communication protocol for delivery to a wireless access terminal. The messaging center has a storage device and a central processing unit in communication with the storage device. The storage device stores a mapping between a first destination address corresponding to a first communication protocol destination address of the wireless access terminal in the first communication network and a second communication protocol destination address corresponding to a destination address of the wireless access terminal in the second communication network. The central processing unit evaluates the mapping to determine the destination address of the wireless access terminal in the second communication network and transmits the message to the wireless access terminal using the second communication network.

Establishing a session in a packet-switched wireless communications network

A wireless communications network includes cell segments each having at least a first type wireless link and a second, different type wireless link. Network access equipment is able to hand off mobile stations between the first type and second type wireless links to balance the loading of the wireless links. In one example implementation, the first type wireless link is a 1&#xd7;EV wireless link, and the second type wireless link is a 1&#xd7;RTT or other CDMA 2000 wireless link. The carriers can be co-located within a common cell segment, or located within different cell segments.

Traffic management in a hybrid wireless network having multiple types of wireless links for packet-switched communications

A wireless communications system includes access networks and access terminals. Within each cell or cell sector, reverse links and forward links are defined between an access network and multiple access terminals in the cell or cell sector. Based on a reverse data rate threshold value calculated from noise measurements, the access network indicates to access terminals within its cell or cell sector whether activity on reverse links are to be increased or decreased.

Controlling reverse channel activity in a wireless communications system

In a wireless communications network, different service levels can be subscribed to by users of mobile stations for packet-switched communications, such as electronic mail, web browsing, text chat, packet-switched voice communications, and so forth. In one arrangement, two different levels are defined. For a first level, when there is no more data to send over a wireless interface between a mobile station and a wireless access system, a logical connection between the mobile station and wireless access system is released. However, at a second level, the logical connection between the mobile station and the wireless access system is not released until after a predetermined timed period from when a send buffer becomes empty, with the send buffer containing data for sending over the wireless interface. A benefit of releasing the logical connection after some predetermined wait period is that the delays associated with establishing another logical connection are reduced.

Method and apparatus for differentiated communications in a wireless network

An ANC is formed to 'dummy fill' a neighbor list that is to be transmitted to a mobile terminal that is presently located in a border cell with neighboring BTSs for which a hand-off request cannot be granted. Accordingly, while a hand-off cannot occur to a BTS of a proximate cell that does not qualify as a neighbor because it is serviced by a different ANC in a 1xEVDO network, identifying the BTSs of the non-neighbor and proximate cells ('dummy list BTSs') prompts the mobile terminal to request a hand-off to a dummy list BTS when the BTS provides a better pilot signal. Because the ANC can readily identify the BTS from the dummy list, it knows that a hand-off cannot be facilitated therefor. Accordingly, the ANC instructs the mobile terminal to drop the call (data packet connection). Because many wireless data packet networks utilize at least a subset of established IP protocols and are able to establish point-to-point protocol communication links (higher layer communication links), commanding a mobile terminal to drop the call is a command to drop the call at the lower layers. The point-to-point protocol communication link is then resumed and the effect of a hand-off is achieved.
