A size associated with a first content file is determined to be less than a threshold size. In response to determining that the size associated with the first content file is less than the threshold size, a combined metadata structure is updated at least in part by combining metadata of the first content file with metadata of a second content file in the combined metadata structure. A snapshot tree is updated to reference a first portion of the combined metadata structure corresponding to the first content file and to reference a second portion of the combined metadata structure corresponding to the second content file.

Using a storage system to optimize and maintain the metadata associated with a plurality of small files

A request to launch an application that is comprised of a plurality of layers is received. Each layer of the plurality of layers of the application is comprised of one or more corresponding virtualization resource units. The one or more corresponding virtualization resource units at each of the plurality of layers of the application is expressed as a resource ratio. It is determined that a surplus of resources is available for one or more applications. In response to determining that the surplus of resources is available for one or more applications, a priority associated with the application is determined. A version of the application is launched based on the determined priority associated with the application. The launched version of the application maintains the resource ratio.

Scaling virtualization resource units of applications

Metadata of each file of a group of files of a storage and chunk file metadata are analyzed to identify one or more file segment data chunks that are not referenced by the group of files of the storage. Fragmented chunk files to be combined together are identified based at least in part on the one or more identified file segment data chunks. The chunk file metadata is updated with an update that concurrently reflects the removal of at least a portion of the one or more file segment data chunks that are not referenced by the group of files and the combination of the identified fragmented chunk files.

Storage system garbage collection and defragmentation

A virtual machine container file is analyzed to determine which portion of the virtual machine container file corresponds to a virtual machine file system metadata of the virtual machine container file. One or more differences between a first version of a virtual machine container file and a second version of the virtual machine container file are determined at least in part by traversing a snapshot structure associated with the virtual machine container file. The determined one or more differences that corresponds to the virtual machine file system metadata portion of the virtual machine container file are identified based at least in part on the analysis of the virtual machine container file. The identified one or more differences corresponding to the virtual machine file system metadata portion of the virtual machine file are utilized to identify one or more changes from the content files included in the first version of the virtual machine container file to content files included in the second version of the virtual machine container file.

Incremental virtual machine metadata extraction

System resource utilizations by one or more core functionalities of a data storage system is monitored. A system resource allocation for one or more applications of the data storage system is determined based at least in part on the monitored system resource utilizations. A number of virtualization resource units allocated to at least one of the one or more applications is scaled based at least in part on the determined system resource allocation. The number of virtualization resource units allocated to the at least one of the one or more applications is based on a corresponding ratio associated with the at least one of the one or more applications.

A plurality of different views of data associated with a storage domain stored on a deduplicated storage are traversed to determine data chunks belonging to each view of the plurality of different views of data associated with the storage domain. A request for a metric associated with disk space utilization of a group of one or more selected views of data included in the plurality of different views of data associated with the storage domain that are stored on the deduplicated storage is received. Data chunks belonging to the one or more selected views of data associated with the storage domain of the group but not other views of the plurality of different views of data associated with the storage domain that are stored on the deduplicated storage are identified. An incremental disk space utilization of the group is determined, including by determining a total size of the identified data chunks. The metric associated with disk space utilization is provided based on the determined incremental disk space utilization of the group.

Deduplicated storage disk space utilization

A request to delete a directory from a storage is received. The directory is unlinked from a parent metadata object. A success confirmation that the directory is unlinked from the parent metadata object is provided. After the success confirmation is provided, one or more metadata objects of the directory are marked for deletion, and the one or more marked metadata objects and at least one of their descendant metadata objects are identified and deleted.

Asynchronous deletion of large directories

A data identifier for each data portion of a first group of different data portions of a first version of data is determined. The first version of the data is represented in a tree structure that references the determined data identifiers. A second version of the data is represented in a second tree structure using at least a portion of elements of the first tree structure of the first version. The second tree structure references one or more data identifiers of a portion of the second version of the data that is different from the first version of the data. The one or more data identifiers of the portion of the second version of the data that is different from the first version of the data are identified and sent. A response indicating which of the data portions corresponding to the sent one or more data identifiers are requested to be provided for replication is received.

Replication of data using chunk identifiers

A method and system for managing a storage cluster is described. An identification of a plurality of nodes of a storage cluster to be removed from the storage cluster is received. It is determined whether to allow the removal of the plurality of nodes. In response to a determination that the removal of the plurality of nodes is allowed, identifications are made of data migrations to be performed to rebalance the data among nodes remaining in the storage cluster after removal of the plurality of nodes. The data migrations are performed. The plurality of nodes are removed from the storage cluster.
