Schedulers that allocate resource grants on a slot-by-slot basis within a scheduling epoch or frame can create a front-loading effect where allocations occur more frequently in slots earlier in frames. To address these and other issues, systems and methods are disclosed for scheduling resource grants in a network to improve network transmit power profiles. For example, a scheduler is configured to randomize the order of slots in a scheduling epoch or frame, with different randomizations for different schedulers, to more evenly distribute slots with resource grant allocations to prevent or reduce a front-loading effect. As another example, the scheduler is configured to randomize start times of resource blocks within a slot to prevent or reduce the front-loading effect.

Improving network transmit power profile by randomizing resource grants on a multi-user communications network

Systems and methods are described that enable user terminals to eliminate or reduce the number of dummy bursts (or bursts with no data) they send. The systems and methods use two burst detectors, a first burst detector that analyzes the physical structure of the signal, and a second burst detector that analyzes the informational structure of the signal. Output from the first burst detector can be used to control operation of a signal decoder that decodes received signals. The second burst detector analyzes output from the signal decoder to determine the second burst indicator. In other words, the first burst detector can be implemented prior to decoding the received signal to provide a first estimate related to the presence or absence of a burst. This can then be used to limit the amount of processing performed by the signal decoder.

Multi-stage burst detection for communications systems

A multi-antenna communication method. A transmitter accepts a plurality of n data sources, and a plurality of MT independent data streams are prepared for transmission through a plurality of MT different antennae. The transmitter introduces a sub-symbol offset between symbols in the plurality of MT independent data streams transmitted by adjacent ones of the plurality of MT different antennae. Receivers for receiving and processing the M&#x3c4; independent data streams are also provided.

Symbol timing relative offset multi antenna system and method

A method for determining a maximum symbol rate of a return communication link includes: assigning transmission opportunities at a current symbol rate equal to a first symbol rate to the user terminal; receiving a plurality of messages during the assigned transmission opportunities at the current symbol rate from the user terminal; first determining if a number of messages incorrectly received is less than a threshold number of incorrect messages and second determining if a power amplifier of the user terminal is operating in a linear region; if the number of messages incorrectly received is less than the threshold number and if the power amplifier is operating in the linear region, assigning a channel at the current symbol rate to the user terminal as a home channel for the user terminal; and otherwise, repeating at an updated current symbol rate.

Adaptive satellite return link symbol rate determination

A satellite communication system is disclosed that utilizes multiple antenna for subscriber terminals to process streams. A first node relays a first stream between the ground station and the subscriber terminals. A second node relays the second lower information rate signal to the subscriber terminals. Spatial relationships are used to differentiate the first stream from the second stream. At least one of the first and second nodes includes a satellite, and the first and second nodes are separated by 50 miles or more. Optionally, frequency ranges for the first and second streams overlap in time. In some cases, the second stream can contain additional information where the second node is terrestrial.

MIMO satellite system

A scalable subscriber terminal for bi-directional communication with a gateway through one or more satellites is provided according to another embodiment of the invention. The scalable subscriber terminal may comprise a plurality of antennas and be configured to operate in at least a first communication mode prior to switching to a second communication mode. The first communication mode may comprise communicating with the gateway through a first satellite. The second communication mode may include communicating with the gateway through the first satellite and a second transceiver. The scalable subscriber terminal may download MIMO operational firmware from the gateway through the first satellite prior to switching to the second communication mode. The first communication mode may be a SISO or SIMO mode. The second communication mode may be a MISO or MIMO mode. The second transceiver may be a second satellite or a terrestrial repeater.

Scalable satellite deployment

A wireless satellite communication device is provided according to one embodiment of the invention. The wireless satellite communication device may include one or more satellite antennas, one or more local antennas and circuitry. A satellite antenna may be configured to communicate with one or more satellites. The local antenna may be configured to communicate with one or more wireless user devices within the vicinity of the wireless satellite communication device. The local antennas may include a local antenna. The circuitry may be coupled with the satellite antenna and the local antenna and may be configured to receive data from the satellite antenna and transmit the data with the local antenna. The wireless satellite communication device may also include a solar panel configured to provide electrical power to at least the satellite antenna, the local antenna, and the circuitry.

Nonlinearity characterization that transmits bursts of information where symbols vary by a value Delta. The bursts can be bursts of a constant power, followed by another burst of a different constant power. An alternative burst system uses interleaved power symbols, where some symbols in a single burst are at the first power and others are at the second power. The signal-to-noise ratio of the two groups of symbols is estimated, and the difference is used to determine whether or not to reduce the amount of saturation in the transmitter.
