A computer-implemented method for securing storage space may include 1) identifying a block map that indicates whether each of a plurality of blocks within a storage system is to return zeroed data in response to read operations, 2) identifying a read operation directed to a block of the storage system that includes non-zeroed data, 3) determining, in response to identifying the read operation, that the block map indicates that the block is to return zeroed data in response to the read operation, and 4) returning zeroed data in response to the read operation based on determining that the block map indicates that the block is to return zeroed data. Various other methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also described.

Systems and methods for securing storage space

Data loss prevention systems and methods begin protecting data upon the creation of the data. One such method involves detecting a file system operation targeting data on a storage device. The file system operation creates or modifies the data or a set of permissions associated with the data. In response to detecting the file system operation, the method prevents unauthorized access to the data. The method begins preventing unauthorized access after the detection of the file system operation and before any subsequent read access to the data via the file system.

Data loss prevention

A method for storage reclamation in a shared storage device. The method includes executing a distributed computer system having a plurality of file systems accessing storage on a shared storage device, and initiating a reclamation operation by using a reclamation agent that accesses the shared storage device. The method further includes reading the file system data structure that represent unallocated storage blocks of one of the plurality of file systems that will undergo a reclamation operation. A plurality of I/O resources that are used to provide I/O to the unallocated storage blocks are then interrupted. Storage from the unallocated storage blocks is then reclaimed, and normal operation of the I/O resources that are used to provide I/O to the unallocated storage blocks is resumed.

Method and system for reclaiming storage on a shared storage device or independent of the mount state of a file system

A computer-implemented method for reclaiming storage space from virtual machine disk images may include (1) identifying a virtual machine that uses a virtual machine disk image as a virtual disk for storage, the virtual machine disk image being stored on a thin-provisioned volume within a host file system, (2) determining that a portion of the virtual machine disk image represents a portion of the virtual disk that is unused by a file system of the virtual machine, (3) based on determining that the portion of the virtual machine disk image represents the portion of the virtual disk that is unused by the file system of the virtual machine, marking the portion of the virtual machine disk image for reclamation from the thin-provisioned volume, and (4) reclaiming the marked portion of the virtual machine disk image from the thin-provisioned volume. Various other methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for reclaiming storage space from virtual machine disk images

A method, in one embodiment, can include determining whether an administrative task for a file system is to be performed within a thin storage memory array. Furthermore, if the administrative task for the file system is to be performed, a determination is made as to whether memory space is freed up while performing the administrative task. If memory space is freed up while performing the administrative task, a determination is made as to whether the freed up memory space satisfies a predefined contiguous memory space threshold. If the predefined contiguous memory space threshold is satisfied by the freed up memory space, a determination is made as to whether a memory space reclamation process is to be performed. If the memory space reclamation process is to be performed, the freed up memory space is reclaimed from the file system.

Automatically reclaiming memory space

A method of maintaining and providing information relating to file deduplication. A first portion of a first file and a second portion of a second file that contain a first content are identified. A first header associated with the first portion is created. The first header identifies the first portion and the second portion containing the first content. The first header is appended to a storage location of the first content of the first portion to form a first data structure for the first file. The first data structure is stored. The first data structure is provided to an application requesting the first file so that duplicate data processing can be avoided by the application. The first data structure is updated when the first file or the second file are altered. A similar process may occur to generate a data structure for the second file.
