A method of manufacturing an intraocular lens that has been customized to provide optimum vision for an eye with prior corneal refractive surgery. Such a custom manufactured IOL will address not only optical correction requirements as currently met by spherical or toric-shaped IOLs, but will correct higher order optical aberrations using needed optimum customized shapes.

A lens for implantation into the cornea of the eye for providing correction for myopia and myopia with accompanying astigmatism wherein a corneal cap section is removed and an implant bed is created to receive the intracorneal lens. The intracorneal lens is formed of a hydrogel type material or other material highly compatible with corneal physiology. In the range of lens powers of approximately -1.0 diopters to -30.0 diopters, the posterior radius of curvature conforms to the receiving surface of the lamellar bed of the cornea and the anterior surface has the radius of curvature necessary to provide the desired lens power for achieving the desired change in the refractive power of the cornea. The lens includes a peripheral transitional zone to join the anterior surface and posterior surface to allow the lens to be implanted onto the corneal bed and to allow for a smooth overlay of the replaced corneal cap section.

A method for attaching a polymethylmethacrylate haptic having a colored core to an optic of an intraocular lens, containing the steps of providing the periphery of the optic with a pair of intersecting holes, inserting an end of the haptic into one hole, inserting an end of a polymethylmethacrylate anchor strand having a colored core into the second hole so that the end of the anchor strand and the end of the haptic intersect, aiming a laser capable of a transmitting energy of a visible wavelength at the intersection of the first and second holes, firing the laser through the optic at the point of intersection of the end of the haptic and the end of the anchor strand, wherein the optic transmits, but essentially does not absorb, the laser energy and the core the anchor strand and the core of the haptic absorb a portion of the laser energy sufficient to fuse the end of the anchor strand and the end of the haptic at their point of intersection.

The tool and method for preparing for insertion into an eye an intraocular lens formed of a compressible material includes an elongated hollow chamber with an inlet end and an outlet end. An intraocular lens formed of a compressible material is extruded to a smaller size that fits in the elongated chamber by a compresser which includes an outlet adapted to be aligned with the inlet end of the elongated chamber. The extruded intraocular lens is pushed through the elongated chamber from the inlet end through to the outlet end.
