The N business components are a subset of M business components (B, B, . . . , B) of a Component Based Model (CBM) of the M business components subject to M&#x2265;2 and N&#x2264;M. Determining the at least one relationship includes relating business components of the CBM with an Information Technology (IT) model of an IT system. The IT model includes abstract IT structures, virtual IT structures, real IT structures, or combinations thereof.

Execution of flexible workflows using artifacts is described. A workflow execution engine is configured to instantiate a process execution (PE) artifact. The PE artifact includes one or more transitions. The workflow execution engine is further configured to execute the one or more transitions and determine if any of the one or more transitions are new or modified. The workflow execution engine is additionally configured to load and execute new or modified transitions, without reinstantiating the PE artifact, responsive to determining that at least one new or modified transitions exist.

System and method for generating implementation artifacts for contextually-aware business applications

A method and system are described for using business artifacts to identify elements of a component business model. Artifacts operated upon by the business are first identified, and then used to analyze the business into business operations. This is done by identifying every business activity that acts on an artifact, creating directed graphs for the business activities, and decomposing the directed graphs into sub-graphs, each sub-graph representing a business operation and being annotated by a verb expression, the annotated sub-graph representing a business service. The business services are then clustered into non-overlapping components, using common affinities reflected in the verb expressions, and organized by partitioning into internal and external operations, exposing a business service for each external operation. The components are then clustered into non-overlapping business competencies, and arranged by accountability level.

An Enterprise Management Portfolio Hub allows a user to perform enterprise portfolio management activities from a single point of control. EPMH relates information, analysis, display and control based on the organizing concept of the business components that comprise the CBM map of the enterprise by collecting portfolio information from existing portfolio management tools and generating a portfolio model. Generating a transition plan for a computer resource portfolio, representing each resource as a state machine, by generating a transition plan, the transition plan having a set of acts for transitioning states of the resources, to move the computer resource portfolio from a present state, the present state based on an inventory of present computer capabilities, to a future state. The future state is identified based on a difference between a present state and an identified state meeting given performance requirements. The transition plan is optimized to maximize the sum value of the computer resource portfolio values added over the state sequence of the transition.

Enterprise portfolio analysis using finite state Markov decision process

A method for validating a specific device configuration when the set of all valid configurations is too large to practically enumerate. The method comprises the steps of selecting a set of components to be included in the device configuration, wherein the set has a single sink component in the set with only sink interfaces; defining an interface for each component, wherein each component is characterized as having a source or a sink property; and establishing connections between components based on the interface of each component. Connections are validated by ensuring that source and sink components have the same property values. Connections are established by verifying that the capacity of the sink is greater than or equal to the capacity of the source, and determining that for each source property there is one sink property with the same value and for each source property that there is one sink property with the same value.

A method s for specifying and implementing automation of business processes where the specification is independently manipulable by both the business process owner and technical implementers, and resulting technical elements can be tested for compliance with every detail in the specification. The method creates a single shared model suitable for understanding and execution in both the business and technical domains by focusing on the specification problem in the area of business automation. The solution to the specification problem lies in Information, Function, Flow (IFF or IF ) factorization of business processes. Models of the business are constructed by way of the IF modeling methodology. This is a complete model which includes, by construction, external specifications of each task included in the business model. The modularization problem is solved by preserving the partitioning of the system created in the business model. The automation system implements concrete modules that uniquely and directly correspond to particular elements whose external specification is determined by the business model.

Method and system for specifying and implementing automation of business processes

A method for relating a specific configuration of complex units constructed from components with standardized interfaces to the user characteristics of the complete unit. The invention provides a bidirectional mapping between a statement of value to the user through the computation of fitness for a particular purpose (or &ldquo;use&rdquo;) and a technical configuration. The customer can be presented with a system optimized for a particular use at a particular price point. Through presenting a range of systems around the optimum point and presenting the strength of the system for a variety of uses as the customer varies components, a wide range of customer choice is presented within an understandable range of choices. Each component is characterized by a strength parameter, and the set of components is arranged as a vector. This configuration vector can then be projected on a vector representing a standard use. Particular configuration vectors are characterized by a direction and a magnitude. The magnitude represents an overall strength of a configuration related to the performance or capacity of its individual components. The direction of a general configuration vector can be compared to the direction of a configuration tuned for a particular purpose or use. Similarly, a configuration can be constructed by scaling its magnitude along the direction defined by a tuned configuration and varying the direction to optimize among various uses.

Specifying complex device configeration through use characteristics

A relational data base system using magnetic bubble domain storage to eliminate data formatting, and dynamic indexing loops to facilitate convenient marking during data qualification and to eliminate redundant traversing of disqualified data during the search operation. A data base is stored in columnized storage tables which insure minimum input/output data traffic during search and retrieval. A suitable storage chip is organized in a major/minor loop organization, with several sections of transfer lines to provide selective access to individual groups of storage loops. Off-chip circuitry includes a comparator for comparing data read from a bubble storage chip with a given criterion in order to select appropriate data, and a dynamic indexing loop which keeps track of comparisons. This indexing loop provides an input to a bubble chip controller so that each subsequent search and compare is done only on already qualified data. This eliminates the need for repeated searching through the same data.
