The invention relates to the generation of desolvated ions by electrospraying to be investigated analytically, e.g. according to the charge-related mass m/z and/or ion mobility. The cloud of highly charged droplets drawn from the spray capillary by a high voltage is usually focused and stabilized by a beam of nebulizing gas surrounding the cloud of tiny droplets. For a fast drying of the droplets, an additional desolvation gas is usually heated to a temperature of up to several hundred degrees centigrade and blown into the cloud of droplets. The invention particularly relates to the heating of the gas which is instrumental in the generation of desolvated ions as part of the electrospraying process without any mechanical or electrical contact between the heating power supply and the heater itself, but rather by heating the heater for the gas using electromagnetic induction.

The invention relates to a mass spectrometer, comprising an ion guide having a plurality of electrodes that are supplied with a radio frequency voltage to facilitate radial confinement of ions in an internal volume defined by inward facing surfaces of the electrodes, the internal volume including a first section having a variable radial diameter along a longitudinal axis of the ion guide, in which the electrodes are helically wound, and an adjacent second section having a substantially constant radial diameter along the longitudinal axis, wherein the electrodes extend from the first section to the second section continuously. The continuous nature of the ion guide electrodes facilitates in particular unhindered axial propagation of ions through the assembly and prevents ion losses during their transmission through different compartments of the mass spectrometer.

Hybrid actuator. The actuator includes a piezoelectric actuator spaced apart from a magnetostrictive actuator. A linkage is in contact with the piezoelectric and magnetostrictive actuator, the linkage having an end including microgrooves. A rotatable shaft includes microgrooves mating with the microgrooves in the linkage end. Electronic circuitry is provided to drive the piezoelectric actuator and the magnetostrictive actuator resulting in the piezoelectric and the magnetostrictive actuators moving 180&#xb0; out of phase thereby moving the linkage to rotate the shaft. It is preferred that the actuators be driven at resonance. In one embodiment, the actuator includes three actuators to provide motion about three axes. In another embodiment the actuator is a linear actuator.
