A capability for modifying parameters of a wireless access node is provided. The capability for modifying parameters of a wireless access node may support use of parameter monitoring and computation functions to jointly improve or optimize capacity for voice and data users in wireless networks. The capability for modifying parameters of a wireless access node may include detecting a trigger event associated with the wireless access node, modifying a signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) threshold of the wireless access node responsive to the trigger event, modifying a call admission control (CAC) threshold of the wireless access node based on evaluation of a parameter associated with modification of the SINR threshold of the wireless access node, and further modifying the CAC threshold of the wireless access node based on evaluation of a parameter associated with modification of the CAC threshold of the wireless access node.

Modifying parameters of a wireless access node

Various methods and devices are provided to address the need for reducing interference in heterogeneous wireless networks. In one apparatus, a network node () that includes a transceiver () and a processing unit () is provided. The processing unit is configured to transmit, via the transceiver, downlink signaling at a primary power spectral density (PSD) level and to also transmit, via the transceiver, a group of control channel elements (CCEs) on a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) at a reduced PSD level, the reduced PSD level being less than the primary PSD level.

Method and apparatus for reducing interference in a heterogeneous network

Systems and methods that configured a Layer-1 destination address for D2D communications. One embodiment is a controller in a network that receives a discovery request from first User Equipment (UE), identifies an application code to announce the first UE during a discovery procedure, and provides the application code to the first UE. The controller receives an address request from the first UE for a D2D communication with one or more second UEs identified during the discovery procedure. The controller derives a Layer-1 destination address for the D2D communication, and provides the Layer-1 destination address to the first UE and to the at least one second UE for pre-configuration of the Layer-1 destination address at the first UE and the at least one second UE before the D2D communication.

Systems and methods for switching radio resource allocation for User Equipment (UE) enabled for a device-to-device (D2D) communication. One embodiment is a base station that switches resource allocation between Mode 1, Mode 2, and a transition mode. For the transition mode, one or more parameters have a value in a range between a value specified in Mode 1 and a value specified in Mode 2 for the parameter(s). The base station detects movement of the UE from in-coverage of the base station to edge-of-coverage, and initiates switching of the resource allocation for the UE from Mode 1 to the transition mode. The base station then detects movement of the UE from edge-of-coverage of the base station to out-of-coverage, and initiates switching of the radio resource allocation for the UE from the transition mode to Mode 2.

Systems and methods for filtering emergency broadcast messages. One embodiment is User Equipment (UE) that store rules for filtering emergency broadcast messages. The UE receives an emergency broadcast message over a paging channel of a mobile network, identifies a class indicator assigned to the emergency broadcast message, selects one of the rules based on the class indicator assigned to the emergency broadcast message, and determines whether the emergency broadcast message is authorized for presentation on the UE based on the rule. The UE then ignores the emergency broadcast message responsive to a determination that the emergency broadcast message is not authorized for presentation.

Filtering emergency broadcast messages that contain commercial content

A system and method for coordinated scheduling of a telecom device to avoid multiplexing of control signaling and data signaling is disclosed. The method includes defining a round trip time for signaling transmissions. The method further includes allocating the signal transmissions and signal retransmissions for uplink transmissions which are directed by a first scheduling mode and downlink transmissions which are directed by a second scheduling mode to take place in a subframe time position where control signaling transmissions are not being transmitted in subframes where data transmissions and retransmissions are being transmitted. This system and method are particularly useful for telecommunication devices in power limited situations.

Method and apparatus for a coordinated scheduling method to avoid multiplexing of control and data for power limited users in the LTE reverse link

One embodiment is a relay User Equipment (UE) enabled for UE-to-network relay. The relay UE determines relay capabilities for acting as a relay to re-transmit traffic between a remote UE and a network. The relay UE generates synchronization signals for synchronizing with other relay UEs in proximity for device-to-device (D2D) communication, and inserts an indication of the relay capabilities in the synchronization signals. The relay UE transmits the synchronization signals over-the-air to the other relay UEs.

In one embodiment, a message is sent from the wireless network to a user equipment having a variable rate vocoder. The message defines transport block sizes for the user equipment to select from in making uplink transmissions if the user equipment is permitted to vary a packet size for uplink transmission. A scheduling grant is sent to the user equipment, and the scheduling grant includes an indicator indicating that the user equipment is permitted to vary the packet size for uplink transmissions by selecting a transport block size from among the defined transport block sizes.

Method to improve voice over IP capacity for user equipment employing variable rate vocoders

In a wireless telecommunications network, there is included: a macro cell () having a first coverage area; and at least one metro cell () having a second coverage area, the metro cell being located within the first coverage area of the macro cell. Suitably, the macro cell is configured to: determine whether or not the macro cell is congested; determine whether or not the metro cell is uncongested; and, if it is determined the macro cell is congested and that the metro cell is uncongested, then the macro cell determines that an attempted application of Cell Association Bias (CAB) for the metro cell is warranted. Suitably, if CAB is in fact applied, the macro cell also implements enhanced Inter Cell Interference Coordination (eICIC) using Almost Blank Subframes (ABS) and informs its other neighboring metro cells of this configuration.

Various methods and devices are provided to address the need for improved multicarrier system operation. In one method, an indication of a received signal power level at a UE (user equipment) is received () from the UE. A carrier is then selected () on which to schedule the UE. A method is provided a wireless system for reliably transmitting context information in robust header compression at low signal energies. More particularly, the methodology of the invention provides an elongated virtual Transmission Time Interval (Super TTI) for the first few (in particular, the first) non-compressed packet (that includes upper layer headers) of a packet stream transmitted using ROHC compression. Improved reception reliability for the uncompressed packet, in particular to decode the headers, results by application to the Super TTI of a combination of TTI Bundling techniques, RLC segmentation and association with multiple HARQ processes and use of enough HARQ rounds.

Method for improved robust header compression with low signal energy

Various embodiments are provided to address some of the current issues in establishing and adapting an HARQ operating point. Some embodiments include determining a metric that indicates the predictability of a signal to noise plus interference ratio (SINR) for signaling from a wireless device and setting a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) operating point for communication with the wireless device using the metric. By setting the HARQ operating point based on a metric that indicates the predictability of SINR for wireless device signaling, throughput can be improved over present-day HARQ operating point adaptation techniques.

In one embodiment, the method of carrier handoff includes receiving a measurement report from a mobile providing information regarding path loss as measured at the mobile for a serving one of the multiple carriers on the downlink. The serving carrier is the carrier over which the mobile communicates on the uplink. The method further includes selectively sending an instruction to the mobile to handoff to a non-serving one of the multiple carriers depending on whether a threshold requirement associated with the serving carrier has been met. Meeting the threshold requirement is based on the received measurement report, and each of the multiple carriers has an associated threshold requirement.
