Technologies for providing secure emergency power control of a high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) system include a controller. The controller includes circuitry configured to receive status data indicative of a present physical status of a power system. The circuitry is also configured to obtain an emergency power control command triggered by a remote source. The emergency power control command is to be executed by an HVDC transmission system of the power system. Further, the circuitry is configured to determine, as a function of the status data, whether the emergency power control command is consistent with the present physical status of the power system and block, in response to a determination that the emergency power control command is not consistent with the present physical status of the power system, execution of the emergency power control command by the HVDC transmission system.

Technologies for providing secure emergency power control of high voltage direct current transmission system

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a power grid control system. One exemplary embodiment is a nested microgrid system comprising a first microgrid including a network controller, a second microgrid, a third microgrid, a first restoration path selectively coupled between the second portion of the first microgrid and the second microgrid, and a second restoration path selectively coupled between the second portion of the first microgrid and the third microgrid. The network controller is configured isolate the first portion of the first microgrid from the second portion of the first microgrid, calculate weighting factors for the first and second restoration paths, select the first restoration path using the first weighting factor and the second weighting factor, and couple the second portion of the first microgrid to the second microgrid using the first restoration path.

Power restoration in nested microgrids

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a power grid control system. One exemplary embodiment is a microgrid comprising a plurality of switching devices, a plurality of distribution line segments, a plurality of measuring devices, each measuring device corresponding to one of the plurality of switching devices, and a network controller. The network controller is configured to: receive measurements from the plurality of measurement devices, determine a fault is occurring within the microgrid using the measurements, assign a topology classification to each of the plurality of distribution line segments, assign a proximity classification to each of the plurality of distribution line segments, determine fault location using the topology classification and the proximity classification, and isolate the fault by transmitting open commands to the two switching devices of the plurality of switching devices closest to the fault.

Fault detection and location in nested microgrids

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a configurable extended interface device are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is an interface device for coupling a power system device of a microgrid with a microgrid controller utilizing a data communication standard incompatible with the power system device, the interface device comprising three input ports configured to receive input from a power system device; a microgrid interface configured to provide output formatted according to any of a plurality of communication protocols, each being compatible with the data communication standard and configured to receive input defining microgrid configuration characteristics; data mapping logic structured to convert any of the input to output formatted according to any of the plurality of communication protocols; and parsing logic configured to parse the received input defining microgrid configuration characteristics effective to cause the data mapping logic to perform mapping of the received input to one of the plurality of communication protocols.

Reconfigurable extended communication interface devices for monitoring and control of power system devices

Methods and systems for secured control of circuit breakers in an electric power substation against undesired direct operation. Consequences of a malicious action are prevented or mitigated using a validation approach that either blocks the command or ensures a negligible effect on system operation. An example method, suitable for implementation in a monitoring device in an electric power substation, includes receiving a command to open or close a circuit breaker. In response, one or more state parameters for the electric power network that comprises the substation are then predicted, the predicted state parameters reflecting an operating state for the network under the assumption that the received command is executed. The method further comprises comparing the predicted one or more state parameters to corresponding operational limits. Execution of the command is then blocked, in response to determining that one or more of the predicted state parameters violate the corresponding operational limits.

Secured control of circuit breakers in a digital substation

A power distribution system for off-shore natural resource platforms includes an off-shore medium voltage direct current (MVDC) power bus. The MVDC power bus includes multiple power bus segments, each of which may be connected to one or more other power bus segments via a corresponding circuit breaker. Each power bus segment may also be electrically coupled to an off-shore renewable energy source, such as a wind farm, and/or an off-shore drilling platform. The off-shore drilling platforms may include local power distribution systems electrically connected to a corresponding power bus segment via a circuit breaker to receive power from the MVDC power bus and supply power to local equipment of the off-shore drilling platform.

A generation and distribution system includes an adjustable-speed prime mover and a doubly-fed asynchronous alternating-current (AC) generator driven by the prime mover and having a first poly-phase circuit, e.g., a stator, and a second poly-phase circuit, e.g., a rotor. The system further includes a first AC bus electrically coupled to the first poly-phase circuit configured to deliver AC power at a first AC voltage to multiple loads, and a second AC bus connected to the second poly-phase circuit configured to deliver AC power at a second AC voltage to another group of loads, the second AC voltage being lower than the first. The system includes a poly-phase transformer having first windings electrically coupled to the first AC bus and having second windings electrically coupled to the second AC bus, and a poly-phase AC-to-AC electronic converter circuit electrically coupled between the second poly-phase circuit and the second AC bus.
