A DHCP server implementation includes transmission of a DHCP packet from a virtual machine executing on a server node to a node agent executing on the server node, generation, by the node agent, of a DHCP response packet based on the DHCP packet and on DHCP information previously stored in a local memory of the server node, and transmission of the DHCP response packet from the node agent to the virtual machine. Neither the DHCP packet transmitted by the virtual machine nor the DHCP response packet are transmitted out of the server node.

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media for deploying an updated image to nodes propagated throughout a distributed computing platform are provided. Upon receiving an indication to install a patch to an operating system residing on the nodes, an existing image of the operating system is accessed at a staging service. The staging service generates the updated image by applying the patch to the existing image. The process of applying the patch includes mounting the existing image of the operating system to a virtual machine, copying the patch to the mounted existing image, setting a command within the existing image that executes upon activating the virtual machine, and activating the virtual machine, thereby executing the command. This directs the patch to be installed. The updated image is pushed to the nodes. The nodes are configured to utilize the updated image as the operating system without performing an individual installation of the patch.

Consistent operating system servicing for distributed nodes

Embodiments are directed to determining latency in an interactive application. In one scenario, a computer system generates an indication that an input has been triggered. This indication identifies the input. The computer system sends the indication to an interactive application that receives and accesses the indication. The computer system further receives an output from the interactive application that includes an indication of the input, and determines an amount of latency between the sending of the generated indication and the receiving of the interactive application output.

Measuring latency in an interactive application

The starting up of an application involving multiple virtual machines by overallocating virtual machines. In response to a request to allocate a certain number of virtual machines corresponding to the application, an augmented number of virtual machines is determined to be allocated in response to the request. The augmented number includes both the initially requested number of virtual machines in addition to a surplus number of virtual machines. The virtual machines are then initiated to start up if they are not already started up. Before all of the virtual machines are started up, code is bound to the virtual machines. Thus, because more virtual machines were initiated startup than are required for the application, the code may be bound to some of the virtual machines in the application before all of the virtual machine have started up.

Augmented allocation of virtual machines for application

Software deployment to server nodes within large-scale networked systems is provided using image-based deployment. A mostly immutable image is provided at a central service and transferred from the central service to the server nodes. The image includes a base image, which is immutable, and a delta image, which is writable and provides role-specific and/or node-specific state to the base portion. When a server node receives an image from the central server, the server node stores the image intact without installation. The server node then runs software directly from the stored image.

Configuring a node. A method includes determining a current state of a target node. The current state of the target node refers to objects currently deployed or running in the remote target node. It includes at least one of an operating system, one or more applications, or configuration setting at the target node. The method further includes determining a desired state for the target node to change the current state. The method further includes accessing a dependency graph based on the version of an agent running on the target node. The dependency graph is supplied to a state machine. The state machine is particular to the target node. The state machine using the current state of the target node, the desired state and the dependency graph, performs operations to drive the target node toward its goal.

State control of remote hosts for management of distributed applications

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media for deploying an update to nodes propagated throughout a data center are provided. Launching new upgrade to hosting environment residing on the nodes typically invokes a mechanism (e.g., fabric controller) to form a group of nodes that are independent of one another with respect to upgrade domains, which are assigned to tenants (e.g., program components of service applications running within the data center) presently hosted by the nodes. The constraints of the update domains are articulated by service level agreements established for the service applications, respectively. Forming the group involves identifying independent nodes for membership, where no two members of the group host analogous tenants (belonging to a common service application) that are assigned to distinct update domains. However, it is acceptable to join to the group those nodes hosting analogous tenants that are each assigned to the same update domain.

In embodiments, a request to perform a management operation on a device in a data center is received and available paths to the device are determined. The paths are determined based on an artifact storing a topology of the data center. Further, a current favored path that is one of the available paths is determined based on a policy and the device is bound for performance of the management operation using the current favored path. In embodiments, the model-based data center management is configured to provide a generic description of the data center architecture and a generic description for one or more devices in the data center. The generic description provides for dynamic runtime data center configuration.

Enhancing availability of remote applications

A computing device is configured to assemble and boot an operating system in stages. A primary boot image is first obtained that includes enough of the operating system to support basic networking. Once the primary boot image is obtained, either through download or from storage on the device, the primary boot image is booted to start the networking. Once the networking is active, the boot activity for the device is suspended and one or more secondary operating system images are downloaded by the device. These images are chained to the primary boot image thereby creating a single/cohesive operating system. These secondary operating system images are successively booted in 'stages' with each successive stage building upon the functionality of the previous stage.
