A method includes obtaining sensor data for a vehicle having an energy storage system that is configured provide power for a home under certain conditions; obtaining home data as to a plurality of characteristics that pertain to power requirements for the home; and calculating, via a processor, a discharge time for the energy storage system based on the sensor data for the vehicle and the plurality of characteristics of the home.

Electric vehicle energy storage system time discharge estimation and management

A method for coordinating a discharge session in which direct current power is offloaded from a power supply, e.g., of an electric vehicle (EV), to a bidirectional offboard charging station includes, in response to connection of the power supply to the charging station via a charging cord set, exchanging charging data between the EV and charging station. This occurs over a low-voltage communication line, with charging data including power and current limits of the EV and charging station. In response to the limits being indicative of negative limits, with the negative limits representing a request for the discharge session, the method includes transmitting the EV power and current limits to the charging station to confirm the request. The discharge session is initiated in response to confirming the request through an exchange of a unique identifier indicating support for the discharge session.

Protocol for discharging DC power from propulsion battery pack to offboard charging station

A preemptive optimization of a power distribution event associated with providing an electrical power from a battery onboard a vehicle to a charging station offboard the vehicle. The preemptive optimization may include preemptively charging the battery in advance of the power distribution event and/or preemptively configuring the vehicle and the battery, such as with establishment of standby session, to provide electrical power from the battery to the charging station without providing the electrical power to the charging station until the charging station thereafter experiences an outage, interrupt, etc.

Preemptive optimization for offboard distribution of electrical power from a vehicle

A controller of a host system executes a method for detecting an external AC electrical device. While an AC charging inlet of the host system is electrically connected to the device via different vehicle-to-live (V2L) and jump-charge connections, the controller detects a control pilot voltage and a proximity voltage. When the control pilot voltage is 0V, the controller determines whether entry conditions are satisfied indicative of a desire to offload power from the host system to the device. When the entry conditions are satisfied, the proximity or control pilot voltage are modulated to generate a modulated voltage signal, which the controller compares to an expected voltage indicative of the device. Power is offloaded to the device when the modulated voltage signal matches the expected voltage.

Host system with AC charging inlet and method for identifying an electrical device connected thereto

A hybrid powertrain system includes an engine and an electric machine respectively connected to first and second drive axles, with the electric machine decoupled from the engine. The system includes a battery pack and a controller. The controller has slip integrators with a corresponding integrator value for a given one of the drive axles. The integrator values are indicative of an accumulated amount of drive wheel slip over a calibrated duration or window. The integrator values change responsive to axle torque and traction control status signal. The integrator values are added together to derive an integrator sum. Responsive to the integrator sum exceeding a calibrated integrator threshold, the controller executes a control action, including automatically executing a Weather Mode in which energy use of the battery pack is reserved for traction control/propulsion of the vehicle.

Automatic prioritization of powertrain operations on surfaces having a low coefficient of friction

A high-voltage battery assembly includes a high-voltage battery electrically connected to a high-voltage bus including a positive rail and a negative rail, wherein the negative rail includes a controllable contactor switch. A boost charging module includes a DC-DC boost converter, a low-voltage power input line, a boost switch and a boost controller. The DC-DC boost converter is electrically connected to the low-voltage power input line via activation of the boost switch. The DC-DC boost converter connects to the positive rail. A low-voltage electrical connector is electrically connected to the low-voltage power input line of the DC-DC boost converter. The boost controller detects low-voltage power from the low-voltage electrical connector, detects that the controllable contactor switch, closes the boost switch, and controls the DC-DC boost converter to convert the low-voltage power on the low-voltage power input line to high-voltage power to charge the high-voltage battery.

Method and apparatus for charging a high-voltage battery assembly

An inverter power module: selectively applies power from a battery to a permanent magnet (PM) electric motor; and selectively provides power output by the PM electric motor for the battery. A switch, when open, prevents power flow the inverter power module from the battery, and, when closed, enables power flow between the inverter power module and the battery. An adjustment module determines an SOC adjustment based on at least one of a vehicle speed and a temperature of the battery. A maximum module receives a first maximum SOC of the battery and that determines a second maximum SOC of the battery based on the first maximum SOC and the SOC adjustment. A clutch control module disengages a clutch, decoupling the PM electric motor from a transmission, when the switch is stuck closed and an SOC of the battery is greater than the second maximum SOC.

Systems and methods for managing battery state of charge

An electrified powertrain system for a vehicle includes an electric machine coupled to a driveline. An inverter controller communicates directly with an auxiliary power module. An ignition module indicates either a key-on state or a key-off state. When the ignition module is in a key-off state, a low-power DC/DC converter generates an output voltage originating on the high-voltage DC bus having a magnitude sufficient to activate the inverter controller. The inverter controller detects a key-off uncontrolled generator (UCG) mode. The inverter controller directly communicates detection of the key-off UCG mode to the auxiliary power module. The inverter controller controls the inverter. The auxiliary power module supplies electric power to operate low-voltage electrically-powered powertrain actuators.

Method and apparatus for controlling an electrified powertrain system of a vehicle

A method of prioritizing power output of first and second power-sources in a vehicle includes identifying, via a controller communicating with a satellite, the vehicle's position on a specific road course. The method also includes receiving a request for total amount of power from both power-sources and determining first power-source power and available second power-source target maximum power based on the vehicle position. The method also includes determining, based on the vehicle position, a minimum energy reserve of a source configured to energize the second power-source and available second power-source power based on the determined reserve. The method also includes subtracting the first power-source power from the requested total amount of power to determine a requested second power-source power. Furthermore, the method includes comparing the available and the requested second power-source power and generating the smaller power value to minimize the time for the vehicle to traverse the road course.

Power prioritization in a vehicle using multiple power-sources

A vehicle system includes an electric motor, an internal combustion engine, and a heating system configured to transfer heat from the internal combustion engine to a passenger compartment of the vehicle. The system includes a controller configured to operate the electric motor and the internal combustion engine according to one of a plurality of drive cycle profiles. The controller selects the drive cycle profile based on an ambient temperature. The drive cycle profiles include a first drive cycle profile that commands power from the electric motor until the battery system reaches a predetermined state of charge and subsequently commands power from the internal combustion engine and a second drive cycle profile that commands power from the internal combustion engine and subsequently commands power from the electric motor.

A method and system used to identify an optimal hybrid vehicle operating mode based on a variety of potential factors, and then recommend the optimal operating mode to the driver so that they can make an informed decision regarding their operating mode selection. In one embodiment, the method uses geographic-, vehicle- and/or environmental-related factors to establish one or more operating zones, monitors the location of the hybrid vehicle and determines when it is within one of the operating zones, and then determines an operating mode that is optimal for that particular operating zone.

An apparatus for controlling the powertrain includes the first and second electric machines, a first electric machine cooling circuit directing a cooling hydraulic flow to the first electric machine, a second electric machine cooling circuit directing a cooling hydraulic flow to the second electric machine, a hydraulic control system receiving a hydraulic flow and selectively channeling the hydraulic flow to the first and second electric machine cooling circuits, and an active electric machine cooling control system monitoring temperatures of the first and second electric machines, monitoring operation of the hydraulic control system, and selectively controlling the hydraulic control system.

Method and apparatus to control motor cooling in an electro-mechanical transmission

Methods and systems for operating an inverter having a plurality of high switches and a plurality of low switches coupled to an electric motor are provided. An event indicative of deceleration of the electric motor is detected. The inverter is alternated between a first mode of operation and a second mode of operation during the deceleration of the electric motor. In the first mode of operation, each of the plurality of high switches is activated and each of the plurality of low switches is deactivated or each of the plurality of low switches is activated and each of the plurality of high switches is deactivated. In the second mode of operation, each of the plurality of high switches is deactivated and each of the plurality of low switches is deactivated.
