A near eye display includes a main freeform prism lens and a micro-display corrector lens, where the main freeform prism lens includes a first freeform surface, a second freeform surface, and a third freeform surface, the first freeform surface refracting a light from a micro-display into a body of the main freeform prism lens, and the main freeform prism lens having an exit pupil diameter greater than 12 millimeter (mm), and a lateral color aberration of less than 4 micrometer (um)) across a diagonal field of view (FOV), where the micro-display corrector lens is positioned between the main freeform prism lens and the micro-display, the micro-display corrector lens including a first corrector lens surface and a second corrector lens surface, and each surface of the main freeform prism lens and the micro-display corrector lens comprises a surface sag.

Achromatic freeform prism for near eye displays

An optical light engine includes a pair of lenticular microlenslet arrays (MLAs) located on each side of a polarization converter. Non-polarized light from a source in the engine is focused by the first MLA onto cells of the polarization converter which converts the light to a common state of polarization to increase efficiency and improve contrast in the system. A half wave retarder is included on the polarization converter to change the polarization of any light that is reflected from downstream optical components to match that of the forward propagating light. The second MLA, which includes a relatively large number of microlenslet elements, collects the light from the polarization converter and homogenizes the light to be highly uniform when received at a downstream imaging panel in the light engine such as a liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) panel.

An optical device comprises a number of waveguides, e.g., color plates, that are individually formed to couple a corresponding color output of a micro-display engine and project an image into a human vision system. Some configurations include stacked structures for suppressing a predetermined wavelength range a corresponding to a wavelength range emitted from a waveguide. Techniques, devices, and systems disclosed herein can mitigate cross coupling that occurs between the waveguides to provide enhanced MTF values over devices that do not include the stacked structures. Individual optical devices configured to suppress a predetermined wavelength range are also provided.
