This invention is a two-color unitary application and vacuuming head for a liquid toner electrostatic printing system. There is a body having three planar faces angularly displaced from one another concentrically about a pivot point, one of the faces being a first toner face having openings therein communicating with a first network of toner passages in the body, a second of the faces being a second toner face having openings therein communicating with a second network of toner passages in the body, a third of the faces being a vacuum face also having individual openings therein communicating respectively with a third network of toner passages in the body and with a fourth network of toner passages in the body. A pivot pin supports the body for pivotal movement about the pivot point and there is apparatus for pivoting the body about the pivot pin between a first position with the first toner face in contact with a printing media being printed upon by the printing system, a second position with the vacuum face in contact with the printing media, and a third position with the second toner face in contact with the printing media.

Unitary tilting toner/vacuum head for electrostatic printers/plotters

A roll apparatus for supporting a continuous web of material is designed to maintain the web in proper alignment as the web is paid from or rewound onto the roll. The apparatus comprises a pair of frame members to rotatably support the roll on a pair of open ended bearing supports. A roll drive has a drive shaft extending to one end of the roll. An interengageable coupler is provided on both the output end of the roll drive shaft and the one end of the roll to permit the roll to be rotatably driven by the roll drive shaft while not being directly secured thereto. This allows for immediate lateral disengagement of the coupler means upon removal of the other end of the roll from its open ended bearing support. A spring loaded plunger is axially mounted at the one end of the roll and biased to move axially outward away from the roll for engagement against the output end of the drive shaft. A lateral translation drive is mounted on the other of the frame members with a lateral translation output mechanism engaging in axially aligned, abutting contact relation with the other end of the roll. This arrangement permits disengagement of the other end of the roll from the lateral translation output mechanism by lifting the other roll end out of its open ended bearing support together with lateral disengagement of the one roll end from the interengageable coupler.

Laterally translatable roll apparatus

The method of reducing arcing in a high power gas transport laser consists of introducing molecular oxygen into the carbon dioxide mixture in which the glow discharge takes place. The oxygen may be in pure form or may be mixed with nitrogen as in air and is admitted to the recirculating gas mixture in predetermined quantities during operation of the laser. The effect of this addition of oxygen to the circulating gas mixture is to prevent the formation of oxide coatings on the copper electrode surfaces, and specifically on the cathode, thereby eliminating this cause of arcing in the laser.
