A device for sewing machines having more than one stitch forming needle for grouping together and aligning the threads of stitch chains with the sewing axis which were formed on individual tongues of the machine's needle plate. An integral projection formed on the needle plate in spaced relation to the tongues is provided on each side thereof with camming surfaces one of which is effective in grouping all of the threads together withdrawn from their respective tongues and the other guides the grouped threads to a position for entry into one of the plate's needle throats after which they become aligned with the sewing axis and then cut to a desired length and the cut portion restrained for incorporation into the next seam to be formed.

A method and apparatus for forming a continuous chain of stitches between pieces of material on a double needle sewing machine which includes a sensing device for detecting the presence of material in the sewing area and connected to the sensing device elements are provided for releasing the tension on one of the needle threads upon indication of absence of material in the sewing area. Additionally an auxiliary feed device functioning in cooperation with the machine's feed dog and needle plate is effective in simultaneously advancing the untensioned needle thread with the single chain of stitches being formed.

Apparatus for forming a chain of stitches on double needle sewing

A needleplate for a two-needle sewing machine of the type for simultaneously forming a straight stitch chain and an over cast stitch chain. The plate is provided with guide surfaces which interconnect the needle holes in the plate and a device for increasing the quantity of thread normally used by the looper associated with the needle for forming the straight stitch chain. At the completion of a sewing cycle the combination of the guide surfaces and excess looper thread permit the straight stitch chains to be moved toward and in alignment with the overcast stitch chain so that they will be incorporated together in the initial stitches formed in the following workpiece.
