A multi-layer network planning system can determine a set of regenerator sites ('RSs') that have been found to cover all paths among a set of nodes of an optical layer of a multi-layer network and can determine a set of candidate RSs in the optical layer for use by the links between a set of nodes of an upper layer, wherein each RS can be selected as a candidate RS for the links. The system can determine a binary path matrix for the links between the set of nodes of the upper layer. The system can determine a min-cost matrix that includes a plurality of min-cost paths. The system can determine a best RS from the set of candidate RSs and can move the best RS from the set of candidate RSs into the set of RSs for the links. The system can then update the binary path matrix.

Routing and regenerator planning in a carrier's core reconfigurable optical network

Devices, computer-readable media and methods are disclosed for determining reachability for a wavelength connection in a telecommunication network. For example, a processor deployed in a telecommunication network may calculate a fiber loss on a link in the telecommunication network using optical power measurements and determine that a destination node of a wavelength connection is not reachable via a path that includes the link based upon the fiber loss of the link that is calculated. In one example, the determining is based upon a number of links in the path, an effective fiber loss for each link in the path, a penalty for nodes in the path, and an acceptable loss value. The processor may further perform a remedial action in response to determining that the destination node of the wavelength connection is not reachable via the path.

Reachability determination in wavelength division multiplexing network based upon fiber loss measurements

A provider edge ('PE') router system and a PE router system controller for hybrid virtualization of PE router functions is disclosed herein. According to one aspect of the concepts and technologies disclosed herein, a PE router system operating at a PE of a network includes an elastic computing system and a plurality of switches. The elastic computing system can include a plurality of hardware resources and a plurality of virtual machines. Each virtual machine of the plurality of virtual machines can utilize at least a portion of the plurality of hardware resources to perform operations. The plurality of virtual machines can include a port virtual machine that provides an interface to a customer edge ('CE') router operating at a CE of the network. The port virtual machine can provide a first set of operations. The plurality of switches can provide a second set of operations.

A method, computer-readable storage device and apparatus for routing traffic in a reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer layer of a dense wavelength division multiplexing network are disclosed. For example, the method determines the reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer layer has asymmetric traffic, and routes the asymmetric traffic in the reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer layer over a plurality of asymmetrical optical connections, wherein the plurality of asymmetrical optical connections is provided with only uni-directional equipment in the reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer layer.

Method and apparatus for routing traffic using asymmetrical optical connections

A method and system for providing joint IP/Optical Layer restoration mechanisms for the IP over Optical Layer architecture, particularly for protecting against router failure within such architecture, includes any one of plural node elements participating in the detection and restoration of the joint IP/Optical Layer architecture upon the failure of a router in one of the nodes. The method creates a cost model for the network, and receives a request from a user for a connection to be supported by the network. The method provides the route recommendation for supporting the connection by applying the cost model.
