Disclosed are enhanced efficacy aluminum-zirconium antiperspirant salt compositions that have a metal (Al+Zr) to chloride (or anion) ratio of about 0.90 to about 1.00. These salts also typically exhibit an HPLC peak 5 area content of about 33% or more, preferably at least 45%, more preferably at least 50%, most preferably at least 55%. Especially preferred are aluminum-zirconium antiperspirant salt compositions which, in addition to the aforementioned high peak 5 content, also exhibit an HPLC peak 4 to peak 3 area ratio of at least 0.4, preferably at least 0.7. Also disclosed are methods of making such antiperspirant salt compositions and aqueous solutions of such antiperspirant salt compositions. Further disclosed are topical compositions comprising a dermatologically acceptable carrier vehicle and a perspiration reducing effective amount of an aluminum-zirconium antiperspirant salt composition as described above.

Aluminum-zirconium antiperspirant salts with low M:CI ratio

Disclosed are enhanced efficacy aluminum-zirconium chlorohydrate antiperspirant salts having a metal (Al&plus;Zr) to chloride ratio of about 0.9 to about 1.2, preferably about 0.9 to about 1.1, most preferably about 0.9 to about 1.0. To achieve the highest possible antiperspirant efficacy, these salts are made with or include a zirconium hydroxychloride of the formula Zr(OH) Cl wherein b is about 2.8 to about 4.0, preferably about 3.2 to about 4.0, so that the Zr:Cl ratio in said zirconium hydroxychloride is about 0.36 to about 0.25, preferably about 0.31 to about 0.25. The present invention also embraces methods of making such antiperspirant salts and aqueous solutions of such antiperspirant salts. The present invention further embraces topical compositions comprising a dermatologically acceptable carrier and a perspiration reducing effective amount of an aluminum-zirconium antiperspirant salt as described above.

A method for providing aerogels, and aerogels produced according to the method, is described. As one aspect, antiperspirant compounds that are in aerogel form, and antiperspirant and deodorant compositions including such salts, are described. The method involves contacting a solution containing material to be processed with a species selected to precipitate the material and selected so as to be miscible with the solvent system of the solution. After the material is precipitated, the material may be washed with the precipitating species until it is substantially free of solvent system. Then, the precipitating species containing the material precipitate is taken above its critical point, and the supercritical fluid is exhausted above its critical temperature. Alternately, a separate isolating species is introduced to displace the precipitating species, or the precipitating species/solvent system mixture. The isolating species then is taken above its critical point, and exhausted above its critical temperature. The invention provides for batch or continuous processes.

The present invention provides a process for making a solid antiperspirant stick comprising a particulate aluminum antiperspirant salt suspended in an anhydrous carrier vehicle, wherein said carrier vehicle comprises a high melting component which melts at 70.degree. C. or higher. This process includes heating the carrier vehicle in a closed mixing vessel to a temperature in excess of 70.degree. C. preferably in excess of 75.degree. C., to melt the high melting component, adding the antiperspirant salt to the carrier vehicle, and cooling the carrier vehicle to form a solid antiperspirant stick. The improvement of the present invention comprises cooling the carrier vehicle below 70.degree. C., preferably to about 65.degree. C. or less, but above the solidification point prior to adding the antiperspirant salt and maintaining the carrier vehicle below 70.degree. C., preferably at about 65.degree. C. or less, during and after the antiperspirant salt addition, thereby substantially preventing agglomeration of the antiperspirant salt into large particles, especially particles in excess of 60 microns.
