A medical light () has an illumination unit () having lighting means () and optical means () for generating a light field (), wherein the lighting means () are formed by an essentially punctiform LED light source () and the optical means () have a plate-shaped collimator () and a cover pane (). The collimator () has a central area (), which is provided with light-refracting structures () on a side facing away from the LED light source (), and an outer area (), which is provided with structures () designed for total reflection on a side facing toward the LED light source (), wherein the cover pane () is provided with a lens structure, which has a plurality of individual lenses which each project the light emitted by the collimator () onto the object plane. The rear side of the central area of the collimator facing toward the LED light source is provided with partial surfaces (), which have an inclination in relation to a plane (E) of the collimator (), in order to asymmetrically expand the light field () in one direction.

A medical luminaire, for example a dental treatment luminaire for the intraoral illumination of a surgical field, has at least one illuminating unit with light-producing means and with optical means for generating a field of light in an object plane, wherein a diffuser is provided that is designed to widen the field of light in the object plane.

A dental system may trans-illuminate teeth using a light source for producing examination radiation by directing the examination radiation at a tooth to be examined. An optical image of the tooth illuminated by the examination radiation may be acquired. The light source may include a light-guiding and/or light-deflecting element that faces the tooth to be examined. Light-guiding and/or light-deflecting elements may be embedded in a transparent, flexible coupling body that is provided to rest on the tooth or the gingiva of the tooth.
