Copolymers comprising carbon monoxide and ethylene contain at least one type of ketal structure and possess enhanced thermal stability so as to be useful in the melt processing of fibers. These novel copolymers, as well as known polyketones with ketal structures, can be formed by treating a copolymer of carbon monoxide and at least one olefin with a mixture of acid, such as a sulfonic acid, which acts as a catalyst or catalyst/reagent, and alcohol, such as a lower alkanol.

Carbon monoxide and ethylene are polymerized in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a catalyst formed from a Group VIII metal source, such as palladium, a bidentate ligand containing a Group VA or VIA heteroatom, such as phosphorus, and an anion which is a non-coordinating, non-acidic tetrasubstituted anion containing a Group IIIA element, such as boron, with the anion preferably being either an unsubstituted or substituted boron tetraphenyl compound. The catalyst is advantageously formed by the exchange reaction of a ligand-conjugated Group VIII metal salt with a salt containing the non-coordinating, non-acidic tetrasubstituted anion containing the Group IIIA element in a solvent medium which causes the separation (due to differing solubilities) of the desired catalyst from the by-product of the reaction which comprises the anion from salt which was used as the Group VIII metal source and the cation from the salt used as the source of the non-coordinating, non-acidic tetrasubstituted anion containing the Group IIIA element. The resulting polyketone product has novel thermal stability characteristics.

Bromomagnesium tetrakis(fluorophenyl) borate reactible intermediates can be formed by reacting at least four equivalents of fluorophenyl magnesium bromide with every one equivalent of boron trifluoride in ether solvent using a sufficient amount of heat to drive the reaction to completion. This type of reactible intermediate can then be reacted with a salt containing a suitable cation, such as ammonium, trityl or onium, preferably substituted with phenyl or alkyl, such as lower alkyl, to form the desired combination of weakly coordinating boron anion and activating cation.

Polyketone compositions can be stabilized by the addition of a suitable stabilizing amount of a blend of a hindered phenol compound, such as a thioester-containing hindered phenol and an epoxy compound (such as an epoxy cycloaliphatic carboxylate).

A linear alternating copolymer of carbon monoxide and propylene, which is substantially free of ester and ether linkages, is formed by the catalyzed reaction of carbon monoxide and propylene in a ketone solvent medium (e.g., acetone). Fibers of an alternating carbon monoxide-ethylene polymer having a molecular weight of at least 100,000 g/mole and a birefringence of at least 650.times.10.sup.-4 can be formed by first extruding a solution of the polymer in a mixed solvent system comprising an aromatic alcohol which is free of alkyl substituents on the aromatic nucleus and another solvent which is a liquid and is other than an aromatic alcohol. The extrusion into the solvent is at an extrusion rate of at least 1 m/min and forms a solvent-containing article which is then cooled or coagulated in a non-solvent for the polymer. The solvent is removed by extraction with a non-solvent for the polymer which is soluble in the mixture of solvents and the resulting article is drawn at a temperature of at least 180.degree. C.

Polyvinyl chloride resin can be plasticized with a carbon monoxide-propylene copolymer. Since the copolymer is soluble in organic solvent, it and the polyvinyl chloride can be dissolved in an organic solvent and then cast to form a film. The copolymer can be a liquid, relatively low molecular weight material, which can be heat blended with the resin along with a smaller amount of a conventional external plasticizer for the resin.

Copper alkoxy alkoxides of the formula CuOR or Cu(OR).sub.2, where R is derived from an alkoxy alkanol of from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, are superconducting ceramic precursors. Compositions containing theser alkoxides solubilized in an organic solvent, such as toluene, can be prepared by the additional use of a barium alkoxide solubilization agent.
