A stylus detecting system includes a sense array including N number of first lines and M number of second lines crossing the N number of first lines; and a touch controller connected to the sense array and configured to: (i) in a touch object detecting mode, drive the N number of first lines as transmission (TX) lines with a finger sensing TX signal and measure reception (RX) signals on the M number of second lines as RX lines, and (ii) in a stylus detecting mode, measure a stylus TX signal transmitted by a stylus, on both the N number of first lines and the M number of second lines, using #number of multiple RX channels (#RX channels) to sense more than one line of the first and second lines at the same time, such that a complete stylus scan includes (N+M)/(#RX channels) number of scans.

A system and method for synchronizing a stylus to a capacitive sense array. The system including a capacitive sense array which includes a plurality of electrodes. A magnetic field is generated using the plurality of electrodes. The magnetic field is used to synchronize the operation of the stylus and the capacitive sense array.

An elongated stylus is configured to be capacitively coupled with a sensor array providing a plurality of electrodes to indicate a position on the sensor array. The stylus includes a housing having an end in an elongated direction of the housing, a conductive tip disposed at least partially extended from the end of the housing, an electrode disposed around the conductive tip and configured to at least partially expose the conductive tip, and a signal transmit drive circuit configured to provide a signal. Control is performed to form an electrical connection between the electrode and a ground and an electrical connection between the electrode and the signal transmit drive circuit when the elongated stylus is activated for capacitive coupling with the sensor array.

A capacitive sensor includes a switching capacitor circuit, a comparator, and a charge dissipation circuit. The switching capacitor circuit reciprocally couples a sensing capacitor in series with a modulation capacitor during a first switching phase and discharges the sensing capacitor during a second switching phase. The comparator is coupled to compare a voltage potential on the modulation capacitor to a reference and to generate a modulation signal in response. The charge dissipation circuit is coupled to the modulation capacitor to selectively discharge the modulation capacitor in response to the modulation signal.

A method for detecting a finger at a fingerprint sensor includes detecting a presence of an object at a fingerprint sensor and, in response to detecting the presence of the object, acquiring image data for the object based on signals from the fingerprint sensor. The method further includes, for each subset of one or more subsets of the image data, calculating a magnitude value for a spatial frequency of the subset, and identifying the object as a finger based on comparing the magnitude value to a threshold.

In one embodiment, the system includes an array of sense cells to sense capacitance variations induced by a detected surface in proximity to the array. The system further includes processing circuitry including one or more differential detectors and a processor to process output signals from the one or more differential detectors to measure displacement of the detected surface in a direction parallel to the array. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

A method for detecting fingerprint spoof objects includes detecting a presence of the object at a fingerprint sensor and, in response to detecting the presence of the object, measuring a set of physical properties of the object based on one or more signals from a set of electrodes of the fingerprint sensor. The set of physical properties includes at least one of a subdermal compliance of the object and a surface adhesiveness of the object. The method further includes distinguishing the object as an actual finger or a spoof based on the one or more physical properties.

A spatial frequency based capacitive motion sensor and method of operating the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, the motion sensor includes an array of sense cells to capacitively sense capacitance variations induced by a surface in proximity to the array. The motion sensor further includes processing circuitry including a multiplexer and a processor to process motion dependent output signals from the array to measure motion of the surface in a direction parallel to a surface of the array. Generally, processor is adapted to execute a program to control the multiplexer to interconnect the sense cells of the array to configure the array as a comb-filter to detect at least one spatial frequency component of the capacitance variations, and to measure motion of the surface in a direction parallel to the array. Other embodiments are also disclosed.
