A method for configuring telemetry transmission includes receiving a transmitted telemetry signal at the earth's surface. The received signal is selected and processed to compute a measured power spectral density (PSD). A theoretical PSD is computed of the transmitted signal at the known carrier frequency and processed in combination with the measured PSD to compute an attenuation factor of the transmitted signal at a plurality of frequencies.

Automated configuration of telemetry transmission

A subsea telecommunication system that includes a first acoustic modem that couples to a first vehicle and communicates acoustically. A second acoustic modem couples to a second vehicle and communicates acoustically with the first acoustic modem. A first computer system receives an environmental parameter and updates a physical layer parameter of the subsea telecommunication system in real time in response to the environmental parameter.

A method for transmitting signals in a subsea environment includes determining that a quality of an acoustic signal is below a threshold. The acoustic signal travels from a first device, through water in the subsea environment, to a second device. A parameter of the first device, the second device, or both is then adjusted to improve the quality of the acoustic signal when the quality of the acoustic signal is below the threshold.

A method is described for performing, by a processor, one or more queries on one or more sensors, for one or more data collected by the one or more sensors, at predetermined instants of time by a downhole modem operably coupled to the one or more sensors, prior to receiving a request for transmission of the data from a surface modem. The method also includes receiving, by the processor, one or more data from one or more sensors in response to the one or more queries, and storing, by the processor, the one or more data in a buffer coupled to the downhole modem.

Data compression for communication in subsea oil and gas systems

Image block transmission includes reading an image block from a downhole sensor. Based on the image block, a set of formation features attributes for the image block are detected. The set of formation features attributes describe a structural property of a subsurface formation. Based on the set of formation feature attributes, a wavelet transform function is modified to obtain a modified wavelet transform function. The modified wavelet transform function is applied to the image block to obtain a set of wavelet transform coefficients for the image block. The image block transmission further includes generating an encoded bit stream comprising the set of formation features attributes and the set of wavelet transform coefficients for the image block, and transmitting the encoded bit stream.

Feature compensated borehole image coding

A system and method to automate data acquisition in a wireless telemetry network optimizes data acquisition to best match a target data set that the user desires given the performance limitations of the telemetry network. The user defines the target data set by providing inputs regarding a target quality of the target data set relative to a data set that has been produced and stored by a communication node in the network. The performance limitations of the network are defined in a system operating envelope. A data acquisition cycle is then automatically initiated and propagated in the network to acquire an actual data set that is an optimal match for the user's target given the system operating envelope.

System and method to automate data acquisition in a wireless telemetry system

Image feature alignment is provided. In some implementations, a computer-readable tangible medium includes instructions that direct a processor to access a reference feature point associated with a high contrast region in a first sub-image that is associated with a first section of a borehole. Instructions are also present that direct the processor to identify several candidate feature points in a second sub-image associated with a second section of the borehole adjacent to the first section of the borehole, with each of the candidate feature points being believed to possibly be associated with the high contrast region. Additional instructions are present that direct the processor to prune the candidate feature points using global solution pruning to arrive at a matching candidate feature point in the second sub-image.

A method for improving a quality of data received from a downhole tool in a wellbore includes receiving a first block of data from a downhole tool in a wellbore. The first block of data represents a first measurement captured by the downhole tool during a first period of time. At least a portion of a bit budget for a second block of data is allocated to the first block of data to produce an updated first block of data. The method also includes receiving the second block of data from the downhole tool in the wellbore. The second block of data represents a second measurement captured by the downhole tool during a second period of time.

Real-time electromagnetic telemetry system

A modem is described having a transceiver assembly, a non-transitory processor readable medium coupled to the transceiver assembly, transceiver electronics coupled to the transceiver and the non-transitory processor readable medium, and a power supply supplying power to the transceiver assembly and the transceiver electronics. The transceiver electronics are configured to calculate a size of an output bit stream based on an encoding scheme to encode for transmission data stored in the non-transitory processor readable medium, decimate the data if the size of the output bit stream exceeds a predetermined size, recalculate the size of the output bit stream, after decimation of the data, based on the encoding scheme to encode for transmission the decimated data, and encode the data using the encoding scheme.

The present disclosure introduces methods and apparatus for acquiring a borehole image corresponding to a sidewall surface of a borehole that penetrates a subterranean formation, wherein the subterranean formation comprises structural elements and a varying geophysical characteristic. The borehole image comprises structure corresponding to the structural elements, texture corresponding to the varying geophysical characteristic, and coverage gaps () in which the structure and texture are missing. Trends corresponding to the structure are extracted from the borehole image. Missing structure within the gaps () is reconstructed based on the extracted trends. Missing texture within the gaps is simulated based on the borehole image and the reconstructed structure. A fullbore image is constructed based on the borehole image, the reconstructed structure within the gaps, and the simulated texture within the gaps.

Borehole image gap filling

Devices and methods for obtaining borehole images at a surface installation while a borehole-imaging downhole tool is logging a borehole are provided. One such method may involve, while the downhole tool is disposed in the borehole, obtaining a first borehole image at a first depth of investigation using the borehole-imaging downhole tool. Compression electronics may compress the first borehole image to obtain a first compressed borehole image. Compressing the first borehole image may involve exploiting a symmetry characteristic of the first borehole image to increase compression efficiency or exploiting a similarity of the first borehole image with a second borehole image to increase compression efficiency, or both. The compressed borehole image then may be efficiently transmitted to the surface installation via a telemetry system.
