A sonotrode includes a stem extending along a longitudinal axis and a cap configured to carry out an ablative process on tissue using mechanical oscillation. The cap has at least one portion that protrudes further in a radial direction than the stem, and the at least one portion has at least one sharp rim. A surface of the cap, which is arranged between a distal end of the stem and the sharp rim of the portion, is a concave surface and/or runs at an opening angle with respect to the stem that is equal or smaller than 90 degrees. A center of mass of the cap is on the longitudinal axis.

Device and method for treating tissue

A surgical apparatus generates energy that is input onto an appliance. The appliance is one of an implant to be implanted in human or animal bone tissue by the input of the energy, and of a tool being an ultrasonic bone cutting and/or punching tool for cutting and/or punching living human or animal bone tissue by input of energy onto the implant in a surgical operation. The apparatus includes a control device and at least one handpiece, the handpiece being equipped to be held by a surgeon during the operation and to couple the energy into the appliance. A system for establishing an anchorage or augmentation in hard tissue with the aid of a material having thermoplastic properties, which is brought to the site of the anchorage or reinforcement in a solid state, is liquefied in situ, and, in a liquefied state, is displaced to contact the object. The system includes a housing with a proximal housing part and mounted therein, a transmitting piece possibly coupled to an energy source and a driver spring, a distal housing part releasably coupled to the proximal housing part, a permeable sleeve couplable to the distal housing part, and a thermoplastic element positionable in the permeable sleeve. The two housing parts, the transmitting piece, the driver spring and the permeable sleeve form a closed load frame in which the thermoplastic element is compressed between the transmitting piece and the permeable sleeve.

System and method for establishing an anchorage or reinforcement in an object with the aid of in situ liquefaction and displacement of a material having thermoplastic properties

A system to be used for transmitting ultrasonic vibration, the system including a sonotrode designed to vibrate in a stationary wave having at least one node position between the distal end and the proximal end of the sonotrode, and a guide shaft with a through opening. During operation the sonotrode extends through the through opening of the guide shaft and the distal end of the guide shaft is situated on a distal side of the most distal node position of the sonotrode. The sonotrode and the guide shaft are adapted to each other for radial clearance between the sonotrode and the guide shaft to be a minimum for a sonotrode portion comprising the most distal node position.

A device and method for perforating a dense bone layer. The device includes a vibration generator for generating mechanical vibration, in particular ultrasonic vibration, and an instrument with an elongated shaft and a distal end piece including a perforator. The distal end piece is arranged at a distal end of the shaft and the proximal end of the shaft is connected or connectable to the vibration generator. The perforator has the form of a solid or a hollow cylinder. The vibration generator, the shaft and the distal end piece are adapted to each other for the shaft to transmit, when connected to the activated vibration generator, mechanical vibration from the vibration generator to the distal end piece and for vibrating the perforator in a direction parallel to its cylinder axis.

Device and method for perforating a dense bone layer

A modular implant system, such as a spinal implant system, having an implant part, for example a (spinal) plate, and at least one fastener, wherein the implant part has a fastener receiving opening. The system also includes thermoplastic material, the thermoplastic material being equipped for being liquefied by mechanical vibration, especially ultrasonic vibration energy. The fastener receiving opening and the fastener can be shaped so that the fastener can be inserted relative to the implant part at a variable angle. The fastener, the plate and the thermoplastic material are equipped for the thermoplastic material, after re-solidification, to secure the fastener against at least one of an axial (back-out) movement of the fastener, a rotation of the fastener relative to the implant part, a variation of the angle of the fastener relative to the implant part.

The invention resides in the field of medical technology. It relates in particular to a sonotrode suitable for use with an ultrasonic surgical instrument. The invention refers further to an ultrasonic surgical instrument for cutting or punching bones, including such a sonotrode as well as a method for manufacturing the sonotrode of the invention.
