Transmission target for a high power electron beam

A hybrid linear accelerator is disclosed comprising a standing wave linear accelerator section ('SW section') followed by a travelling wave linear accelerator section ('TW section'). In one example, RF power is provided to the TW section and power not used by the TW section is provided to the SW section via a waveguide. An RF switch, an RF phase adjuster, and/or an RF power adjuster is provided along the waveguide to change the energy and/or phase of the RF power provided to the SW section. In another example, RF power is provided to both the SW section and the TW section, and RF power not used by the TW section is provided to the SW section, via an RF switch, an RF phase adjuster, and/or an RF power. In another example, an RF load is matched to the output of the TW section by an RF switch.

Hybrid standing wave linear accelerators providing accelerated charged particles or radiation beams

A Hybrid (SW+TW) Linear Accelerator is disclosed having high beam efficiency and broad energy regulation that is useful for security inspection, non-destructive testing, radiotherapy, and electron beam irradiation of objects. The Hybrid Linear Accelerator (LINAC) provides superior energy regulation, and includes a reversed RF power distribution which substantially improves RF power utilization, thereby eliminating need for an output RF load, and ensuring broad electron beam energy regulation operating in a broad range of input RF power, thereby efficiently running at a variety of input electron beam current intensities at high efficiency. The Hybrid LINAC may be equipped with a fast and/or slow phase shifter and/or a power regulator having a phase shifter and a current regulator, while operating much more efficiently than known LINACS. The Hybrid LINAC permits efficient operation without an external magnetic field, thereby avoiding use of a power-consuming solenoid, consequently reducing cost of production, operation, and maintenance.

Hybrid linear accelerator with a broad range of regulated electron and X-ray beam parameters includes both standing wave and traveling wave linear sections for providing a multiple-energy high-efficiency electron beam or X-ray beam useful for security inspection, non-destructive testing, radiation therapy, and other applications

An x-ray inspection system for identifying fissile material includes one or more sources of penetrating radiation that generate first, second, and third instantaneous spectra where the object is exposed to the second only if there is no penetration of the first and the object is exposed to the third only if there is no penetration of the second. Further, the source of the second and the third spectra is a source adapted to provide single pulses. Consequently, ambient levels of radiation may be held below cabinet levels while identifying objects containing fissile material.

Single-pulse-switched multiple energy X-ray source applications

An RF linear accelerator using CW or low amplitude pulsed RF excitation which can efficiently accelerate charged particles from 0.1 C to relativistic velocities in excess of 0.9 C. A charged particle source feeds charged particles having velocities of about 0.1 C into a first type RF LINAC having a plurality of side coupled resonator cavities each having a drift tube in the middle. The RF length of the cavities is set relative to the velocity of the particles and the RF excitation wavelength such that the particles experience in-phase accelerating E fields in the gaps on either side of the drift tube and are shielded from decelerating E fields while inside the drift tubes. The RF coupling cavities establish sufficient phase change between adjacent resonators such that the particles arrive in the adjacent resonator cavities in synchronization with oscillations in the standing wave therein so as to experience further acceleration. The first RF LINAC accelerates the particles to 0.5 C approximately. The charged particles are then passed through a conventional RF LINAC with a CW source which is optimized to accelerate the particles from 0.5 C to relativistic velocities. A variable phase change RF coupler couples the RF between the first RF LINAC and the second RF LINAC such that a variable degree of synchronization can be achieved such that the energy of the particle beam exiting said second RF LINAC can be modulated by varying the phase change. A conventional CW RF LINAC is also disclosed with a duty cycle controlling system for operating the RF and charged particle sources with variable duty cycles so as to achieve control of average beam power and enable higher momentary beam energies than would otherwise be the case for CW LINACs.
