The present invention herein provides a process for making an aminobenzoate ester of an alcoholic organic compound. In one aspect, there is provided a process for making an aminobenzoate ester comprising the steps of: (a) providing a reaction mixture comprising an alkyl aminobenzoate, an alcohol reagent and a suitable transesterification catalyst; (b) introducing an auxiliary alcohol to the reaction mixture; and (c) exposing the reaction mixture to conditions effective to provide an end-product mixture comprising the aminobenzoate ester.

A process is set forth for converting synthesis gas into dimethyl ether (DME) in a single step comprising contacting the synthesis gas with a bifunctional catalyst system having a methanol synthesis functionality and a methanol dehydration functionality. In particular, the present invention is an improvement to said process for increasing the stability of the bifunctional catalyst system, particularly when the process is conducted in the liquid phase. The improvement comprises introducing a methanol containing stream into the DME reactor such that the methanol concentration throughout the DME reactor is maintained at a concentration greater than 1.0%, generally between 4.0% and 8.0%. In one embodiment of the present invention, the methanol containing stream comprises at least a portion of the byproduct methanol from the DME reactor such that said portion of byproduct methanol is introduced into the DME reactor as a recycle stream.

Pressure swing adsorption to remove CO.sub.2 from a gas stream is conducted using an improved alumina obtained by impregnating a starting alumina with a basic solution having a pH of at least 9, e.g. of a basic compound such as KHCO.sub.3, and drying at a temperature low enough to avoid decomposing the basic compound to a form which adsorbs CO.sub.2 such that the compound does not regenerate under reduced pressure purging.

The present invention is a synthesis, product and process for activated carbon and preferably carbon molecular sieve separation of air to produce a nitrogen product wherein a carbon is partially pyrolyzed, impregnated with a transition metal salt and further pyrolyzed to develop enhanced microporosity. The resulting microporous carbon can then be activated with carbon dioxide or steam and then pore-sized by cracking of hydrocarbons on the carbon to produce a carbon molecular sieve.
