An absorbent article including a chassis, and first and second fastener ears coupled to the chassis, each fastener ear having a wave crest portion having an upper edge and a lower edge. A portion of the upper edge of the first fastener ear corresponds to a portion of the lower edge of the second fastener ear, and a portion of the upper edge of the first fastener ear does not correspond to a portion of the lower edge of the second fastener ear.

Absorbent articles, fastener ears for absorbent articles, and processes for making same

Absorbent articles suitable for use as diapers or other hygiene products are provided. The absorbent articles have one or more closure system features including dual elasticity, rear closure, and the use of co-adhesives for the fasteners. Products according to the invention may provide any of several benefits, including a high level of comfort in use, resistance to tampering by the wearer, and relatively quiet attachment and detachment of the closures.

Absorbent article having re-fastenable closures

A method for manufacturing fastener ears for absorbent articles and other garments includes the step of cutting a wave-shaped pattern along the longitudinal axis of an elongated strip of material. The wave-shaped cutting pattern is substantially centered along the strip and divides the strip into a first web and a second web. Each web has a series of ear shapes, with each ear shape having a wave crest portion. Each wave crest portion has a first edge with a convex curvature. The method also includes the step of cutting each of the ear shapes out of its respective web to form a plurality of fastener ears. A fastener ear formed by such method is also contemplated.

A disposable absorbent article, e.g., a diaper, having a top sheet, a back sheet, a core and a fluid acquisition system. The fluid acquisition system is formed by wrapping a layer of a non-woven material about the core, so that the marginal edge portions of the layer overlap each other over the upper surface of the core. The overlapping marginal edge portions are hydrophillic to form a dual layer fluid acquisition system. The remainder of the layer of non-woven material is hydrophobic. An additional layer can be located adjacent the overlapping portions to form a three layer acquisition system.

A diaper is provided which includes a chassis having front, rear, and crotch portions. The chassis includes a topsheet, backsheet, core and pair of ears. Each ear includes a topsheet, backsheet and proximal, distal, first connecting, and second connecting edges. The first connecting and second connecting edges connect the distal to proximal edges. The proximal edge is integral to the chassis. Each ear has an elastic layer sandwiched between its topsheet and backsheet. Each elastic layer has first and second edges which are secured to the ear topsheet and backsheet. The elastic layer has a central portion not secured to either the ear topsheet or backsheet. Each ear topsheet and backsheet has perforations. The tearable portion is adjacent to the central portion. Each ear may be pulled away from the chassis causing the ear topsheet and backsheet to tear at the perforations thereby exposing the elastic layer.

Perforated stretch ear diaper

A disposable absorbent article is provided which includes a chassis having a front portion, a rear portion, a crotch portion, a topsheet, a backsheet, an absorbent core, and a pair of ear portions integral to the backsheet. Each ear portion has proximal, distal, first connecting and second connecting edges. The first and second connecting edges connect the distal to the proximal edges. The proximal edge is integral to the topsheet. Each ear portion has an elastic layer having first and second edges where the first edge and second edge are secured to the backsheet. The elastic layer has a central portion not secured to the backsheet. The ear portion has a tearable portion extending from the first to the second connecting edges and extends along the central portion of the elastic layer. A fastener joined to each of the elastic layers secures the disposable absorbent article.

Stretch ear diaper having perforated backsheet

A disposable absorbent article, e.g., a diaper, and a method of making it. The article is arranged to be worn by a wearer to trap and collect fluid waste products, e.g., urine, of the wearer. The article has a flexible chassis and plural tabs for holding the diaper in place on the wearer. The chassis is made up of a top-sheet, a fluid acquisition system, and a fluid absorbent core. The top sheet is formed of a fluid pervious material, e.g., a fibrous material. The core includes fast acting fluid absorbing material, e.g., fluff, and a slow acting fluid absorbing and retaining material, e.g., SAP. The fluid acquisition system comprises a first fluid acquisition layer formed of apertured polymeric, e.g., three dimensional, film and a second fluid acquisition layer, e.g., a fibrous material, secured together and located between the top-sheet and the core, with the first fluid acquisition layer facing the top-sheet and the second fluid acquisition layer facing the core. The fluid acquisition system serves to facilitate the transference of fluid into the core, e.g., spread out the fluid over the core and providing it to the core at a rate at which the materials of the core can accommodate. The first and second acquisition layers may be joined or bonded together via various techniques, such as by adhesives, ultrasonic bonding, heat sealing, hot knife-slitting, hydroentanglement, physical stitching or sewing, etc.

Absorbent article with improved fluid acquisition system and method of making the same

A disposable absorbent brief is provided with a reinforced fastening tape landing zone which permits repeated removal and reattachment of the fastening tape for adjustment of fit. The backing sheet of the brief is a relatively thin and inexpensive sheet material which has at least one relatively thin and inexpensive, adhesively-secured strip of landing zone reinforcement sheet material. The reinforcement strip provides the strength required to allow tape removal and reattachment without causing tearing of the reinforcement strip or backing sheet or separation of the reinforcement sheet from the backing sheet. The adhesive layer is applied to the reinforcement sheet stock by slot coating as a continuous and uninterrupted layer on the reinforcement strip in a cost-effective and efficient process.

Disposable absorbent article having a reinforced fastening tape landing zone

A disposable absorbent article is provided with a odor control powder which is unscented in a dry state and releases a burst of fragrance when wetted, such as by human waste. The powder contains a relatively small amount of fragrance oil, such as 0.5% to 4% by weight, to prevent skin irritation to the wearer. The small amount of fragrance oil is microencapsulated in a starch which constitutes from about 50% to 90%, and preferably about 70%, of the total weight of the particles. Sodium bicarbonate is also included in the particulate odor control material in an amount ranging from 5.0% to 45%, and preferably about 25% by weight, of the total weight of the particles. The sodium bicarbonate promotes skin wellness by controlling the pH levels of the fragrance oil, starch and human waste. A small amount of flow agent is also contained in the particulate odor control material.
