High performance selective light wavelength filtering providing improved contrast sensitivity

The present invention relates to ophthalmic and non-ophthalmic systems with blue light filtering and Yellowness Index ranges. UV and IR filtering are also included. Industrial applications are also outlined in the invention.

High energy visible light filter systems with yellowness index values

A system is provided that selectively blocks blue light in addition to having low overall transmittance values. The average value of the transmission spectrum of the system across the wavelength range 400 nm-470 nm is between 0% and 30% and the average value of the transmission spectrum across the wavelength range 470 nm-700 nm is between 0% and 70%. The transmission spectrum of the system has a first local minimum in transmission between 400 nm-470 nm.

The first filter may comprise a multi-layered dielectric mirror layeror Rugate filter, and the second filter may comprise dye-impregnated lens layer(s)or Rugate filter. The first filter blocks essentially 100% of UV light, while the second filter establishes an increasing transmission profile that cuts on sharply at approximately 415 nm, and establishes an increasing transmission profile between approximately 415 nm to about 475 nm. The cut-on slope rises approximately 0.15% in transmissivity for every nanometer of increasing wavelength change, with a maximum filtering effect within the 440-465 nm range. These dual filters provide a balanced light transmission profile that reduces harmful tight transmission and prevents macular degeneration, cataracts and other ocular injuries, while still preserving visual acuity.

A system may be provided that comprises a substrate and a selective light wavelength filter that selectively blocks between 5 and 50% of light having a wavelength at or near 400-460 nm. The system may comprise any one of, or some combination of: a window, automotive glass, a light bulb, a flash bulb, fluorescent lighting, LED lighting, instrumentation, a display system, a visual system, a television, or a computer monitor.

An improved lens with Rugate filter specifically designed to be worn in prescription and non-prescription glasses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses and sunglasses, and to provide protection against macular degeneration by reducing harmful visible blue light transmission and ocular photochemical damage. The lens at least includes a single lens layer with a Rugate filter deposited thereon to selectively block visible blue light. Other layers may be added including a polarizing layer, dielectric layer and/or color tint in a lens sandwich configuration, to additionally give a high degree of UVA and UVB protection, color contrast, and glare reduction. The Rugate filter is a stop band which yields an exceptional light transmission profile under all light conditions, thereby maximizing protection as well as clarity of vision. In the multi-layer embodiment, all of the lens layers provide comprehensive protection for preventing macular degeneration, cataracts and other ocular injuries, yet maintain a balanced light transmission profile for visual acuity.
