The invention relates to probiotic microbes, including but not limited to Lactobacillus species and Bifidobacteria species, and their compositions and methods of employing said compositions for treating and preventing intestinal and other infections which originate from the intestine, in newborn infants. The invention also invention relates to the ability of probiotic organisms, either in viable or nonviable state, or their by-products, to interfere with pathogenic infection through short and long term colonization of the intestine, inhibition of growth of the pathogens, and assisting the host to fight off the infecting organisms.

Probiotic therapy for newborns

The present invention provides methods and compositions for the oral administration of Lactobacillus and/or other probiotic organisms, such as Bifidobacterium, for establishment and maintenance of a healthy urogenital flora. The invention also provides methods and compositions to reduce the risk of disease.

Oral administration of lactobacillus for the treatment and prevention of urogenital infection

This invention relates to lactobacillus compositions and methods of employing said compositions for treating or preventing urinary tract infections. More particularly, this invention relates to the ability of certain strains of lactobacilli to adhere to uroepithelial or vaginal epithelial cells and to exhibit inhibitory activity against the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Lactobacillus compositions and methods for treating urinary tract infections

The present invention is directed towards isolated lactobacillus biosurfactants and the process for producing same. The present invention is also directed to methods for preventing urogenital infection in mammals using the isolated lactobacillus biosurfactant. The present invention is further directed to methods of inhibiting microbial biofilm formation using the isolated lactobacillus biosurfactant to prevent the formation of bacterial biofilms, and to displace adherent biofilm-forming bacteria from surfaces.

Lactobacillus therapies

This invention relates to lactobacillus, skim milk, lactobacillus growth factor (LGF) and lactobacillus compositions and methods of employing said composition for preventing urogenital infections. More particularly, this invention relates to the ability of strains of hydrophobic or hydrophilic lactobacillus to adhere to biomaterials, intestinal, vaginal and uroepithelial cells, to resist the action of certain anti-microbial agents and to dominate the urogenital flora.
