Example implementations relate to provisioning a deduplication data store. An example includes receiving inputs indicating an expected data amount and at least one retention period for the deduplication data store; performing a comparison of the at least one retention period to a stored data structure; determining at least one storage multiplier based on the comparison of the at least one retention period to the stored data structure; and determining an amount of storage to provision for the deduplication data store based on the expected data amount and the at least one storage multiplier.

Provisioning a deduplication data store

In some examples, in response to an event at the deduplication system, a system accesses item metadata of a backup item that is backed up to a remote object storage system, the item metadata of the backup item including range information indicating a range of identifier values for portion objects of the backup item stored in the remote object storage system. The system issues, based on the range information, requests to obtain respective attribute information of the portion objects of the backup item stored in the remote object storage system. The system determines, based on the attribute information, a name of a given portion object of the backup item already used.

Example embodiments relates to method and systems to restore content of a volume at a given point in time. A computing device to restore content of a volume at a given point in time comprises a physical processor and a machine-readable storage medium comprising machine readable instructions executable by the processor that cause the computing device to command a storage array to select a surviving snapshot that was created at a nearest point in time to the given point in time among a set of surviving read-only snapshots of content of the volume stored in the storage array, command the storage array to create an editable surviving snapshot of the selected surviving snapshot, perform a delta function associated with a deduplication system, the deduplication system comprising a set of backup objects for the set of surviving read-only snapshots and a set of backup objects for a set of non-surviving read-only snapshots of content of the volume and restore content of the volume at the given point in time by commanding the storage array to modify the editable surviving snapshot based on an output of the delta function. Each of the backup objects within the deduplication system comprises a manifest, the manifest comprising a list of chunk signatures that represents chunks of data. The delta function is performed between a manifest of a backup object of the selected surviving snapshot and a manifest of a backup object of a snapshot created at the given point in time.

Restoration of content of a volume

A technique includes communicating a plurality of hashes associated with chunks of an object to at least some stores of a plurality of stores on which the object is distributed; and in response to the communication, receiving responses indicating a distribution of the associated chunks. The technique includes selecting one of the stores based at least in part on the responses and communicating deduplicated data associated with the object to the selected store.

A technique includes communicating signatures of samples of first data associated with an object to at least some stores of a plurality of stores on which the object is distributed, and in response to the communication, receiving responses indicating numbers of the samples stored on the respective at least some of the plurality of stores and regulating on which store of the plurality of stores deduplicated data associated with the first data is stored based at least in part on the numbers and a pattern of data storage on the stores.

Examples include the acquisition of objects names for portion index objects. Some examples include acquisition, from a remote object storage system, of a list of object names for a plurality of portion index objects, stored in the remote object storage system. In some examples, for each of the portion index objects, the acquired object name includes an identifier of an associated deduplicated backup item and information identifying a data range of the associated deduplicated backup item that is represented by metadata of the portion index object.

A technique includes in response to a request to access a distributed object stored on a plurality of team members, retrieving data stored associated with the distributed object from at least one of the team members and selectively reporting information about a degraded state of the retrieved data.

Examples include the storage of format-aware filter format tracking states. Some examples include storage of a format tracking state for a format aware filter in a backup system in association with a backup object, access of the format tracking state from the backup system in response to detection of a potential continuation of a backup image, and applying the format-aware filter using the accessed format tracking state.

A technique includes determining at least one metric associated with a replication operation to replicate at least a portion of a first object stored on one of a client, a first storage appliance and a second storage appliance onto another one of the client, the first storage appliance and the second storage appliance.
