Embodiments of the present invention provide for broadcast pause and resume for enhanced television. In some embodiments, software key frames identifying a state of a browser at a plurality of points in time may be used for synchronizing a series of graphics to a video stream. Other embodiments may be described and claimed.

Broadcast pause and resume for enhanced television

The apparatus involves a hand-held housing with a memory for storing coded audio event data, a mechanism for downloading into the memory coded audio event data and digital-audio electronics for retrieving coded audio event data from memory, converting it to an audio signal and playing it out. In one disclosed embodiment of the invention, the data are stored in accordance with a musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) standard, and may be created on an appropriately equipped personal computer (PC). The capacity of such a hand-held device is far greater than if the data were conventionally digitized or coded. A wirelessly networked system of such music devices in physical proximity is disclosed that enables audio score synthesis and mixing by at least one such device of a synthesized score and an inputted score for outplay to others in a real-time musical jam or music-sharing session.

A broadcast pause and resume system may enable replay from a random access memory of video information received from a video distribution source such as cable, broadcast television or satellite distribution as examples. Key frames may be stored which enable the replay from the memory of both video and enhanced content. In some embodiments of the present invention, a reference to stored enhanced content may be stored instead of storing the entire contents of a browser cache.

A broadcast pause and resume system may simultaneously read and write data to a disk memory by using separate read and write heads which are driven by separate controllers. In this way, information may be read from and written to the same disk at the exact same time, improving the simultaneity of read and write operations of the broadcast pause and resume system.

A processor-based system may utilize a remote control unit which not only allows mouse input commands to be provided to the processor-based system but also includes a microphone and a speech engine for decoding spoken commands and providing code for presenting the commands to the processor-based unit. The processor-based system may provide information to the remote control unit about the vocabulary currently being used by applications active on the processor-based system. This allows the speech engine in the remote control unit to focus on a more limited vocabulary, increasing the accuracy of the speech recognition function and decreasing the capabilities necessary in the remote control unit based speech engine.

Still image capture under computer control. The computer is instructed to capture the still image capture at an occurrence of a trigger and, subsequently in time, captures the still image. In embodiments, the instructions can be made through a graphical user interface (GUI) displayed on a monitor or a keyboard coupled to the computer. The instruction can start a timed count until the still image is captured. In embodiments the trigger can be an external event, such as sound or motion sensed by appropriate transducers. In yet other embodiments, the computer issues a notification of an occurrence of a capture or a warning of an impending capture.
