The present invention provides coating powders that enable improved filiform corrosion resistance in clear or tinted clear coating comprising an epoxy functional acrylic copolymer component having a Tof from 40&#xb0; C. to 90&#xb0; C. and chosen from a copolymer or copolymer mixture that comprises, based on the total weight of copolymerized monomers in the epoxy functional acrylic copolymer component, i) from 10 to 40 wt. % of one or more epoxy functional unsaturated monomer, e.g. glycidyl (meth)acrylate; ii) from 2.0 wt. % to 13 wt. %, preferably 12 wt. % or less, or, more preferably, 6 wt. % or less, of one or more hydrophobic acrylic monomer that has a mass solubility in water of 3.5 g/L or less and which would itself form a homopolymer having a glass transition temperature (T) of 50&#xb0; C. to 175&#xb0; C., e.g. a bicycloalkyl(meth)acrylate, and iii) the remainder of one or more nonionic comonomer that is not a hydrophobic acrylic monomer ii), e.g. methyl methacrylate; one or more crosslinker for the thermosetting acrylic copolymer; and, optionally, one or more adhesion promoter, e.g. epoxy resin, a light stabilizer, an ultraviolet (UV) absorber, and/or a hydrophobic submicron particle.

Epoxy functional acrylic coating powders and powder coatings therefrom having improved filiform corrosion resistance

The present invention provides coating powder compositions for making filiform corrosion resistant coatings, the compositions comprising particles or agglomerates which include, intimately mixed, each of one or more thermosetting acrylic copolymer, one or more crosslinker for the acrylic copolymer and one or more hydrophobic submicron particle additive, wherein the hydrophobic submicron particle additive comprises from 0.01 to 1.5 wt. %, based on the total weight of the coating powder. The hydrophobic submicron particle additive comprises a submicron inorganic oxide, e.g. fume silica or a metal oxide, and one or more organosilicon compound, e.g. polydimethylsiloxane. In addition, the invention provides filiform corrosion resistant clear coat or tinted clear coat powder coatings on metal, e.g. aluminum wheels or forged alloy substrates.

Acrylic coating powders comprising hydrophobic particles and powder coatings therefrom having improved filiform corrosion resistance

The present invention provides storage stable powder compositions comprising one or more carboxylic acid or anhydride functional, phosphorus-containing polyester chosen from aromatic polyesters having an acid number of 15 or higher mg KOH/g polyester, aliphatic polyesters having an acid number of 20 or higher mg KOH/g polyester. The acid functional, phosphorus-containing polyester comprises the reaction product of one or more polyacid, one or more phosphorus-containing acid or salt thereof and one or more polyol. Preferably, the one or more polyol reactant contains no &#x3b2;-hydrogen such as, for example, neopentyl glycol (NPG). The acid functional, phosphorus-containing polyester may comprise all or part of a binder powder composition, such as a coating powder, or it may comprise an additive thereto that imparts improved pigment wetting and corrosion resistance to a binder composition.

Acid functional phosphorus-containing polyester powder compositions and powder coatings made therefrom

The present invention provides smooth and even ultraviolet (UV) cured powder coatings for wood comprising one, two or three layers of one or more waterborne stains, or clear or tinted waterborne basecoat coatings and one or more topcoat layers of clear or tinted clear powder coatings made from one or more than one free radical UV curing resin, one or more than one photoinitiator, and one or more than one post-blend dry flow additive, such as fumed alumina. The coatings of the present invention have a natural wood appearance, are foam free and fully coat substrates at powder coating thicknesses ranging from 0.5 mil (12.7 &#x3bc;m) to 2.0 mil (50.8 &#x3bc;m). Accordingly, the coatings will fully and evenly coat uneven, beveled and/or routered substrate surfaces, including open grain natural wood substrates, such as oak. In addition, the present invention provides a method for making coatings comprising applying one or more waterborne stain to the wood to form a stain layer, drying or curing the said stain layer, sanding or grinding to de-nibb the said stain layer, applying clear or tinted UV curing coating powder to the stained substrate, flowing out the applied coating powder to form a continuous film, and UV curing the film formed from the powder.

The present invention provides a low temperature curing coating powder composition comprising a mixture of a high gloss film-forming system and a low gloss film-forming system. Preferably, the high gloss film-forming system comprises a GMA (glycidyl methacrylate) resin, a curing agent, and a catalyst and forms a coating having a gloss greater than 80% measured at 60&#xb0;. Preferably the low gloss film-forming system comprises a carboxyl terminated polyester, acrylic resin and a catalyst and forms a coating having a gloss less than 50% measured at 60&#xb0;. The composition of the present invention provides coatings having a control gloss, which can range from a low to a high gloss and is useful for coating heat-sensitive substrates.

Coating powder composition, method of use thereof, and articles formed therefrom

Corrosion- and chip-resistant coatings for high tensile steel components, such as automotive coil springs, are formed from a coating powder composition of 'toughened' epoxy resin. In a single coat embodiment, the entire coating is loaded with at least 75 phr zinc powder. In a dual coat embodiment, an inner coat is loaded with at least 75 phr zinc and an outer, zinc-free coating is reinforced by the addition of fibers and/or by a foaming agent which renders it porous.

Corrosion-and chip-resistant coatings for high tensile steel

The present invention provides ultraviolet (UV) curable powders for powder coatings comprising one or more than one free radical curable epoxy resin and one or more than one second free radical curable resin, or, alternatively, one or more than one free radical curable unsaturated polyester resin in combination with one or more than one wax, and one or more than one free radical photoinitiator, wherein the coating powder has an average particle size of 5 to 25 microns. Further, the present invention provides a method for making a powder for thin (1.0 to 4.0 mil), smooth coatings having an average particle size of from 5 to 25 microns, the method preferably comprising jet milling dry powder or spray drying an aqueous emulsion, fluid mixture, or a supercritical suspension of a powder or of the composition for making the powder. Still further, the present invention provides a method of making a powder coating comprising applying the powder to a substrate, preferably hardwood, heat fusing the applied powder, and UV curing at a temperature and for an amount of time sufficient to form a powder coating having a low gloss finish.

Powder coating of free radical curable epoxy resin and another free radical curable resin

The present invention, a powder composition for making powder coatings comprising one or more than one curable polymer or resin and an agglomerate of a core-shell polymer, wherein the agglomerate of a core-shell polymer has an average particle size of from 5 to 190 microns, preferably from 10 to 127 microns. The powders in accordance with the present invention provide a cured powder coating that is flexible, smooth, and which may be applied in a thickness of only from 0.3 to 8 mils. In a preferred embodiment of making a powder in accordance with the present invention, the agglomerate is cryoground to form a reduced agglomerate prior to adding it into a powder as a post-blend or a powder-forming mixture as a preblend. The preferred core-shell polymer for use in accordance with the present invention comprises an acrylic impact modifier having a poly(methyl methacrylate) shell and a poly(butyl acrylate) core. Further, the preferred curable polymer or resin powder is an epoxy resin, wherein the powder composition is a low temperature curing one component powder composition which cures at from 107 to 149 degrees C.

Smooth, flexible powder coatings

The present invention provides UV curable coating powders comprising a blend of one or more than one free radical curable resin and one or more than one cationic curable resin, at least one free radical photoinitiator and at least one cationic photoinitiator, including suitable cross-linking agents and additives to enhance the chemical and physical properties of the coating appearance. The coating powder, preferably finely ground to between 5 and 30 microns in average particle size, is applied to a substrate, heat fused, and cured for an amount of time sufficient to form a powder coating having a low gloss finish.

A powder coating composition and method of applying it to a substrate, such as medium density fibreboard, consisting of a glycidyl methacrylate resin, a dicarboxylic acid cross-linking agent, a catalyst selected from phosphines, phosphonium, ammonium 2-phenyl-2-imidazoline, substituted imidazoline and isopropyl imidazole Bis-A epoxy resin adduct and a matte texturing agent. The inventive formulation is able to create a matte texture finish on the surface of the substrate. Since the cured final coating is resistant to yellowing and moisture, it is of great utility in the kitchen cabinet making industry.
