A surgical tool includes a handle having opposing first and second ends, a lead screw and a spline are rotatably coupled to and extend between the opposing ends. The spline is arranged a distance from the lead screw such that the lead screw assumes torsional loading generated by the spline. Another surgical tool includes first and second splines with a first activating mechanism coupled to the first spline and a second activating mechanism coupled to the second spline. Torsional loading generated by the first and second splines to operate the first and second activating mechanisms are balanced by rotating the first and second splines in opposite directions. A method of minimizing torsional loads on components of a robotic surgical tool includes actuating the surgical tool and assuming a torsional force acting on a carriage of the surgical tool with a load balancing member included in the surgical tool.

A surgical system includes a detector, comprising an array of pixels configured to detect light reflected by a surgical instrument and generate a first signal comprising a first dataset representative of a visible image of the surgical instrument. The surgical system also includes a processor configured to receive the first signal, generate a modified image of the surgical instrument that includes a control panel. The control panel includes one or more control elements representative of one or more operating parameters of the surgical instrument. The processor is further configured to receive an input to the control panel from a user, the input being effective to change one of the operating parameters. The processor is also configured to generate a command signal based on the input to change the one of the operating parameters.

An end effector for use with a surgical stapling instrument is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw to grasp tissue therebetween, and a staple cartridge. The staple cartridge comprises staples deployable into the tissue. The end effector further comprises a magnetic sensor configured to measure a parameter indicative of an identifying characteristic of the staple cartridge, an impedance sensor configured to measure a parameter indicative of an impedance of the tissue, and a processing unit in communication with the impedance sensor. The processing unit is configured to determine a property of the tissue based on an output of the impedance sensor.

A surgical stapler includes an anvil half and a cartridge half. The anvil half includes an anvil channel member and an anvil surface. The cartridge half releasably couples with the anvil half and includes a cartridge channel member having a distal portion that receives a staple cartridge, and a latching member coupled to the cartridge channel member and movable between open and closed positions. A resilient member is arranged at a proximal end of one of the anvil half or the cartridge half, and a projection is arranged at a proximal end of the other of the anvil half or the cartridge half. The resilient member is configured to contact and releasably couple with the projection to thereby couple the proximal end of the anvil half with the proximal end of the cartridge half while the latching member is in the open position.

An ultrasonic surgical instrument includes an end effector including an ultrasonic blade, an ultrasonic waveguide, an ultrasonic transducer assembly, and a carrier. The acoustic waveguide includes at least a proximal portion thereof extending along a longitudinal axis. The ultrasonic transducer assembly includes a fixation member and is operatively connected to the acoustic waveguide such that the acoustic waveguide is in acoustic communication with an ultrasonic transducer. A surgical tool includes a drive housing having opposing first and second ends and a drive input rotatably mounted to the drive housing at the first end, a carriage mounted entirely within the drive housing and movable between the first and second ends via actuation of the drive input, an instrument driver matable with the drive housing at the first end, a drive output matable with the drive input such that rotation of the drive output rotates the drive input and translates the carriage within the drive housing, a shaft coupled to and extending distally from the carriage and penetrating the first end and the instrument driver, and a fin connected to the carriage and accessible by a user at an exterior of the drive housing, the fin being manually translatable along the exterior of the drive housing between the first and second ends to thereby translate the carriage.

A modular shaft assembly is disclosed. The modular shaft assembly includes one or more inputs configured to receive input motions from a surgical instrument system, such as a handle, for example. The shaft assembly further includes one or more on-board inputs configured to generate input motions. The input motions received and generated by the shaft assembly are transferrable to an end effector of the shaft assembly to perform various functions at the end effector. The end effector can include a staple cartridge and a firing member which is movable between a proximal position and a distal position to eject staples from the staple cartridge. The end effector can include a plurality of jaw members and the firing member can comprise camming members which are configured to position the jaw members relative to one another.

A trocar assembly includes a trocar housing that defines a working chamber, and a cannula having opposing proximal and distal ends and defining a lumen that extends between the proximal and distal ends. One or more windows are defined in the cannula at or near the distal end, and one or more compliant deflection devices are arranged at or near the distal end and at least partially receivable within the one or more windows. Each compliant deflection device includes a radial biasing member that extends radially inward toward a centerline of the cannula.

A robotic surgical tool includes an elongate shaft extendable through a handle that provides a drive input, an actuation system housed within the handle and operatively coupled to the drive input such that actuation of the drive input operates the actuation system, a rocker bar system arranged at a proximal end of the shaft and actuatable to articulate an end effector at a distal end of the shaft, and first and second drive cables extending along a portion of the shaft, each drive cable having a proximal end anchored to the shaft proximal to the handle and a distal end anchored to the shaft distal to the handle, wherein the drive cables are threaded through portions of the actuation and rocker bar systems such that operation of the actuation system acts on the drive cables and thereby actuates the rocker bar system to articulate the end effector.
