A method of decreasing aldehyde content in polymeric materials, for example in bottles comprising polyethylene terephthalate, uses a compound (A) which comprises first, second and third fragments which comprise a moiety Formula A) (A) and a moiety. (Formula B) NH (B). 

Method of decreasing aldehyde content in a polymeric material

Additives such as colourants may be incorporated into polymeric materials such as polyesters, such as in polyester fibre production, by use of a liquid formulation comprising colourant and a vehicle. The vehicle may comprise a functionalised pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane or trimellitate. The liquid formulation is suitably contacted with the polymeric material in a melt processing apparatus.

Polymeric materials

Thermoplastic polymers, for example fluoropolymers, are foamed by use of a solid formulation comprising thermoplastic polymer and manganese oxalate.

High pressure injection apparatus () for addition of a liquid formulation into a melt stream comprises a first pump which is arranged to accurately meter the liquid formulation (including highly loaded formulations comprising solids comprising particles of relatively large size) and a second pump which boosts the pressure of the formulation to that of the melt stream into which it is to be injected. In an embodiment, the apparatus includes a tank () for initially receiving liquid formulation. The tank is subjected to ambient temperature and pressure and need not be stirred or otherwise agitated. The tank is arranged to deliver the formulation via pipe () into a first pump () (which may be a diaphragm pump or a progressing cavity pump). The pump is arranged to work at a pressure up to 120 bar to boost pressure. Downstream of pump (), a pipe () is arranged to deliver formulation from the pump () to a gear pump (), driven by a motor (). The gear pump acts to meter the liquid formulation. In an alternative embodiment, apparatus may include a progressing cavity pump to meter formulation and a gear pump to increase pressure. The apparatus may be used to inject a fluid formulation into a melted polymeric material.

A liquid formulation for addition to a polymeric material comprises a vehicle, an additive (e.g. a colourant) and carbonyl bis (1-caprolactan)). The liquid formulation may be used to colour melt spun fibre (e.g. PET or polyamide).

A method of producing a product, for example a stretch blow moulded container having a metallic or pearlescent appearance, comprises selecting a mass, for example a container preform, comprising a thermoplastic polymer which incorporates a carrier polymer and stretching the thermoplastic polymer during production of said product, for example from said mass. Said carrier polymer is suitably polydimethylsiloxane and the mass may be made in a process which comprises contacting a thermoplastic polymer with a liquid formulation comprising carrier polymer and colourant.

A method of decreasing aldehyde content in a polymeric material such as polyethylene terephthalate which includes contacting the polymeric material with a compound including first, second and third fragments each having a moiety and a moiety NH.

A container () includes an oxygen-sensitive beverage, for example a vitamin C-containing beverage. A closure () seals the mouth () of container (). The closure includes an oxygen scavenging structure, for example a closure, which comprises a hydrogen generating means and a catalyst for catalysing a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.

Scavenging oxygen

Thermoplastic polymers, for example fluoropolymers, are foamed by use of a solid formulation comprising thermoplastic polymer and an oxalate compound which includes a moiety selected from potassium, calcium, titanium, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, zirconium and barium.

A method of introducing an additive into a polymeric material comprises using a liquid formulation comprising an additive, for example a colorant, and a vehicle comprising an aliphatic or aromatic tri- or di-carboxylic acid covalently linked by ester bonds to two or more chains. The method involves contacting the liquid formulation with the polymeric material in a melt processing apparatus. The cavity transfer mixer may be used in the process. A fiber is suitably subsequently produced.

Method of introducing an additive into a polymeric materials

A closurefor a container body includes a linerwhich incorporates a hydrogen generating device comprising a hydride which generates hydrogen on contact with moisture. The liner may be an interference fit within the body. The linerand other liners described may include control means for controlling passage of moisture to the hydrogen generating means and/or sealing means for sealing the closure to a container. In use, with the closure secured to a container, water vapor passes into linerand contacts the hydride which generates hydrogen. A reaction between hydrogen and oxygen which has passed into the container takes place, catalysed by a catalyst, and water is produced. Thus, oxygen is scavenged.

A reservoir assembly () comprises a container (), a support assembly () on which the container () is mounted and fixed and a rotary electric vibrator device () coupled to the support assembly (). The container holds a shear thinning additive for a plastics material. The reservoir assembly is arranged so that on operation of the device (), an appropriate frequency and amplitude of vibration is applied to the container () and, therefore, its contents. As a result, a liquid dispersion in the container is shear thinned and recovery of dispersion from the container is increased.

Delivering liquid additive

A food container () includes a rigid thermoformed plastics carton () which holds a dry foodand is closed by a removable film closure (). The film () incorporates a hydride which is arranged to generate hydrogen on contact with moisture. Additionally, the film () is arranged to have relatively high water vapour permeability and relatively low hydrogen gas permeability. In use, water vapour from air surrounding the container () passes into the film () and reacts with the hydride to generate hydrogen. Due to the relatively low hydrogen permeability of the film (), the hydrogen is restricted from escaping from the container. Instead, the hydrogen then reacts with any oxygen within the container in a reaction catalysed by a catalyst also associated with the film closure (), thereby to scavenge oxygen within the container () and protect the food () from oxidation.

A method of introducing an additive, for example a dye, into a polymeric material comprises using a liquid formulation comprising the additive, a vehicle and an active compound added to increase the melt viscosity of the polymeric material. The active compound may be a multi-functional anhydride. The liquid formulation is suitably contacted with the polymeric material in a melt processing apparatus and suitably a cavity transfer mixer is used in the process. A fiber is suitably subsequently produced.
