According to one aspect, the subject matter described herein includes a near-eye optical see-through display. The display includes a backlight layer including a plurality of point light sources. The display further includes a spatial light modulator (SLM) layer for modulating light from the point light sources. The spatial light modulator is located in the optical path between the point light sources and a user's eye. The spatial light modulator layer includes pixels that are controllable to modulate light from the point light sources such that the light that impacts the user's eye has a desired intensity and color to display a synthetic image. At least a portion of the backlight layer and the spatial light modulator layer are optically transparent to allow a user to view a real scene through the spatial light modulator layer and the backlight layer such that the synthetic image appears to be overlaid on a view of the real scene. Each pixel in the spatial light modulator layer modulates only a portion of the light emanating from the point light sources such that the synthetic image appears to be in focus to the user's eye.

The subject matter described herein includes systems, methods, and computer readable media for generating an augmented scene display. An exemplary method includes forming, using a display device operating in a first stage, an augmented virtual image by emitting light rays through a plurality of spatial light modulation layers included in a display device. The method also includes forming, using the display device operating in a second stage, an occluded real image by opening a shutter element of the display device to receive light rays from a real object and utilizing the plurality of spatial light modulation layers to block any light ray from the real object which coincides with the augmented virtual image. The method further includes generating an augmented scene display that includes both the occluded real image and the augmented virtual image by alternating the operation of the display device between the first stage and the second stage.

Methods, systems, and computer readable media for generating an augmented scene display

A system, method, and computer program product are provided for implementing a pinlight see-through near-eye display. Light cones configured to substantially fill a field-of-view corresponding to a pupil are generated by an array of pinlights positioned between a near focus plane and the pupil. Overlap regions where two of more light cones intersect at a display layer positioned between the array of pinlights and the pupil are determined. The two or more light cones are modulated based on the overlap regions to produce a target image at or beyond the near focus plane.
