A method of supplying power to an electrically isolated wind farm is provided including a plurality of wind turbines and a power generator. In a low wind condition, where a wind speed falls below a threshold value, active power and reactive power is supplied from the power generator to a first wind turbine and wind farm passive components. In a second operation mode after the first operation mode, active power is supplied from the power generator to the first wind turbine and a second wind turbine, and reactive power is supplied/consumed by the first wind turbine to the cables and transformers between it and the second wind turbine.

Method of supplying power to a wind farm in a low wind condition

A converter network bridge controller for a power converter hardware being connectable to an alternating current electricity network is provided. The controller includes an output unit configured for generating a quadrature voltage component reference to a PWM modulator which determines the switching of the power converter hardware, wherein the quadrature voltage component reference includes a first signal and a second signal. The output unit includes a first part and a second part. The first part is configured for generating the first signal based on a current reference for an active current to be generated by the power converter hardware. The second part is configured for providing the second signal to reduce a difference between a converter active current component of measured feedback current and the current reference for active current.

Converter network bridge controller

A method of controlling an inverter for converting a DC input to an AC output, the method including measuring a voltage of an AC output produced by the inverter; determining a drive voltage for controlling the inverter; and if a difference in amplitude and/or phase between the drive voltage and the measured voltage exceeds a predetermined threshold, modifying the drive voltage to reduce the difference in amplitude and/or phase between the drive voltage and the measured voltage. The method may be particularly useful for controlling an inverter during 'islanded' operation with a variable load, and may therefore be useful e.g. in marine, battlefield, disaster relief and/or aviation electrical power systems.

Distributed power generation systems generally include a number of power sources and electrical power loads interconnected by a distribution network. Electrical switches and fuses are provided such that local groups of power sources and power loads can be established. Should there be a degradation in the distribution network in terms of a set of criteria such as electrical frequency, current or voltage then the switch or fuse may be thrown to establish each local group as an island. By monitoring divergence from a set of criteria a method and controller may be utilised whereby the distribution network as a whole is considered and configured to establish virtual islands which operate prior to the establishment whether inadvertently or deliberately of actual islands within the distribution network. In such circumstances the transition from normal operation for the distribution network to islanded operation for the distribution network is less severe.

Distributed power generation

A local electrical system having an electrical generator is connected to an electrical generator network. The local electrical system has a controller to avoid the non-detection zone of loss-of-mains relays. The controller is arranged to monitor the real power flow from the electrical generator network to the local electrical system and to determine if the absolute value of the real power flow is below a first predetermined value to determine if there is a close match between the power requirements of the local electrical system and the electrical generator. If there is a close match, then the controller is arranged to monitor the reactive power flow the same way. If there is a close match also with the reactive power, then the controller is arranged to adjust the target reactive power output from the electrical generator of the local electrical system.
