Turbine blade assemblies of a turbine include airfoils that are mounted on bases. The leading and/or trailing edges of the bases are provided with curved portions. Likewise, curved portions may be provided on leading and/or trailing edges of the angle wings of a turbine blade assembly. Also, curved portions may be provided on the leading and/or trailing edges of nozzle assemblies of a turbine.

A method operates a gas turbine that includes a compressor section, a turbine section and an extraction cooling system. The method includes monitoring an operation of the gas turbine, directing a cooling air flow through the extraction cooling system from the compressor section to the turbine section in response to normal operation of the gas turbine, and directing a warming air flow through the extraction cooling system to the compressor section and the turbine section in response to shutdown of the gas turbine.

A blade attachment apparatus for a turbine is provided and includes a member, which rotates about an axis of the turbine, including fore and aft disk posts that retain corresponding fore and aft turbine blades, respectively, fore and aft of a turbine nozzle and a central portion proximate the turbine nozzle and an attachment retained between the fore and aft disk posts and the fore and aft turbine blades and coupled to the central portion, such that a portion of the attachment interrupts a purge flow through the turbine.

A system for providing compliant rotating seals including a rotating portion that has one or more teeth extending radially from it, and a stationary portion that has a plurality of bristles extending radially from it. The one or more teeth rotatively engage the plurality of bristles creating a tortuous path between them that resists a leakage of gas or fluid through them.

A turbine casing may include an outer surface with a false flange and an inner surface with a heat sink positioned adjacent to the false flange.
