A radio receiver comprising a compensator arranged to compensate for intersymbol interference in a signal received at the receiver and a configurator arranged to configure the compensator, wherein the compensator comprises a programmable filter and the configurator is capable of configuring the filter in a first mode to operate as an ISI equaliser or in a second mode to implement a RAKE finger set.

Multimode receiver architecture

A signal receiver is configured for receiving signals from multiple antennas, wherein the signal from one of the antennas is phase compensated relative to the signal from another of the antennas. The receiver comprises (i) an equalizer configured to equalize signals received from the antennas in accordance with a determined equalization vector and (ii) a processor for determining the equalization vector. The processor is configured to determine the equalization vector in dependence on (i) a first channel estimate for a first channel from one of the antennas to the receiver and (ii) a phase-adjusted version of a second channel estimate for a second channel from another of the antennas to the receiver.

Apparatus and method for receiving imperfectly phase compensated electromagnetic signals

A controller for a communications device, comprising: a receiver arranged for receiving a first data block and a second data block, each data block comprising a plurality of analogue signals; a digitizer arranged for converting each analogue signal into a digital value and marking each digital value as saturated when the digital value exceeds a digital range; and a processor arranged for modifying at least one digital value of the first block by combination with a corresponding digital value of the second block except where the digital value of the first block is marked as saturated and marking each modified value as saturated when the modified value is outside a defined range.

Schemes for creating a surplus of decoding iterations in a decoder are described. The surplus can be used to augment the decoding of signal blocks. The option of using an idle decoder to decode blocks marked as unproductive for decoding is also described.

Management of decoding effort in an iterative decoding scenario

Wireless transmission techniques are described, including techniques used to generate scrambling codes for use in wireless transmissions, such as spread spectrum transmissions. In some embodiments, scrambling codes may be iteratively generated using multiplicative factors. The multiplicative factors may be predetermined and stored in advance, reducing processing time when the codes are needed. The multiplicative factor iterations may involve predetermined algorithms, such as squaring and powers of two iterations.

Method and apparatus for generating scrambling codes

Apparatus for classifying a ray is disclosed, wherein the ray is received at a code division multiple access receiver. The apparatus comprises: means for receiving a neighbouring cell list comprising at least information concerning scrambling codes used by, and timing information concerning at least one neighbouring cell; means for selecting a cell from the neighbouring cell list, the cell having associated therewith one or more scrambling codes; means for determining whether the number of cells in the neighbouring cell list exceeds a threshold; means responsive to a positive determination for attempting to classify the ray to the selected cell without utilising means for mixing a received signal with a scrambling code; and means responsive to a negative determination for mixing a received signal with a scrambling code used by the selected cell to provide a mixed signal, and for examining the mixed signal to determine if the ray originates from the cell.

Method and apparatus for fast W-CDMA acquisition

A method of classifying a ray is disclosed, the ray being received at a code division multiple access receiver. The method comprises: determining if a timing characteristic of the ray falls within a predetermined range of a timing characteristic of a ray classified to a given cell; in response to a positive determination, mixing a received signal with a scrambling code used by the given cell to provide a mixed signal; and examining the mixed signal to determine if the ray originates from the given cell.
