Circuit protection devices which comprise a PTC conductive polymer element and a second electrical component which is thermally coupled to the PTC element and which, when a fault causes the current in the circuit to become excessive, generates heat which is transferred to the PTC element, thus reducing the time taken to 'trip' the PTC element. The second component is for example a voltage-dependent resistor which is connected in series with the PTC element under the fault conditions and is thus protected from damage. Alternatively, the second component is a thick film resistor which is connected in series with the PTC element.

Composite circuit protection devices

Conductive polymer compositions based on polyvinylidene fluoride have improved properties when the polyvinylidene fluoride has a very regular structure which can be characterized by a low head-to-head content in the repeating units. The improved properties include electrical stability when contacted by organic fluids and/or when maintained at elevated temperatures in air. Such compositions which exhibit PTC behavior are particularly useful in the form of self-limiting heaters which are immersed in organic fluds, especially flexible strip heaters for heating diesel fuel before it passes through a fuel filter.

Conductive polymer compositions

A method of making a conductive polymer sheet in which a hollow conductive polymer extrudate is slit and flattened. The resulting sheet may have improved resistivity uniformity over conventionally extruded sheet. The sheet is useful in producing electrical devices such as heaters and circuit protection devices.

Method of making a conductive polymer sheet

Melt-shapeable polymeric compositions comprising a first fluoropolymer of relatively low crystallinity, e.g. a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and a perfluorinated comonomer, and a second fluoropolymer of relatively high crystallinity, especially a fluoropolymer obtained by irradiating PTFE or another fluoropolymer which cannot be melt-shaped in the absence of other polymers. The weight ratio of the first to the second polymer is preferably 0.3:1 to 2.5:1. The compositions have a wide variety of uses, for example as insulating materials or, if they contain carbon black or another conductive filler, as PTC conductive polymers.

Melt-shapeable fluoropolymer compositions

Electrical devices containing PTC conductive polymers which have been cross-linked in two steps, preferably by radiation. The conductive polymer is heat-treated above the temperature at which it begins to melt between the two cross-linking steps, and/or the cross-linking steps are such that a center section of the conductive polymer, intermediate the electrodes, is substantially more cross-linked than the conductive polymer adjacent the electrodes. The process is particularly useful for the preparation of circuit protection devices which are subject to high voltage faults.

Conductive polymer compositions comprises a polymeric material having dispersed therein (a) conductive particles composed of a highly conductive material and (b) a particulate filler. The compositions exhibit a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity and undergo a large increase in resistivity as the temperature increases above a certain value. The compositions are useful in preparing electrical devices such as current limiting devices, heaters, EMI shields and the like.

Conductive polymer compositions and devices

Compositions which exhibit PTC behavior with a switching temperature (T.sub.s) above 0.degree. C., which have a resistivity at a temperature below T.sub.s of less than 7 ohm. cm, and which comprise a crystalline polymer and a particulate filler component which comprises carbon black having a particle size, D, which is from 20 to 150 millimicrons and a surface area S in m.sup.2 /gram such that S/D is not more than 10. The composition preferably has a peak resistivity of at least 1000 ohm. cm and is electrically stable when aged at elevated temperature. The quantity ##EQU1## is preferably less than 1, especially less than 0.5. Shaped articles of such compositions are prepared by a process in which the carbon black is dispersed in the molten polymer and the dispersion is then melt-shaped, the total energy used in preparing and melt-shaping the dispersion being 1 to 300 hp. hr. ft.sup.-3, preferably 1 to 100 hp. hr. ft.sup.-3, especially 1 to 50 hp. hr. ft.sup.-3. The compositions are particularly useful in circuit protection devices.
