A method for moving a vehicle in a reverse direction is provided. The method includes: providing an internal combustion engine, a transmission, and an electric machine; adjusting a valve timing of either an intake valve or an exhaust valve during a non-firing mode of the internal combustion engine to reduce a rotational resistance; and, rotating the internal combustion in a backwards or reverse direction so that the vehicle moves in a reverse direction.

Reversing method for a vehicle powertrain

A camshaft phaser for an internal combustion engine includes a stator defining a receptacle therein. The stator includes a ring and a plurality of webs extending radially inward from the ring. The camshaft phaser also includes a rotor rotatable with respect to the stator and received inside the receptacle. The rotor includes a center section and a plurality of vanes extending radially outward from the center section. The center section abuts the webs to define chambers circumferentially between the webs. Each of the vanes is positioned in one of the chambers and sealingly engaging an inner circumferential surface of the ring. At least one of the chambers is a locking chamber and at least one the vanes is a locking vane positioned in the locking chamber. The camshaft phaser also includes a locking valve in the locking vane configured to allow fluid to enter into the locking chamber and to prevent fluid from flowing out of the locking chamber to lock the rotor with respect to the stator in a locked orientation.

A camshaft phaser, including: an input element arranged to receive a first rotational torque and rotatable about an axis of rotation; an output element rotatable about the axis of rotation, rotatable with respect to the input element, arranged to non-rotatably connect to a camshaft, and arranged to transmit the first rotational torque to the camshaft; and a trigger wheel non-rotatably connected to the output element, arranged to identify a rotational position of the output element around the axis of rotation, and including a magnetic material with at least one segment having a first magnetic charge, and with at least one segment having a second magnetic charge, opposite the first magnetic charge.

A single unit solenoid-controlled hydraulic fluid control valve (HFCV) configured to recirculate an exiting hydraulic fluid from a first hydraulic actuation chamber to a second hydraulic actuation chamber is provided. The HFCV includes a selectively movable spool having an inner fluid chamber configured to receive and deliver the exiting hydraulic fluid to one or both of either a sump or one of the first or second hydraulic actuation chambers.

A hydraulic fluid control valve (HFCV) configured to recirculate an exiting hydraulic fluid from a first hydraulic actuation chamber to a second hydraulic actuation chamber is provided. The HFCV includes a selectively movable spool having an inner fluid chamber configured to receive and deliver the exiting hydraulic fluid to one or both of either a sump or one of the first or second hydraulic actuation chambers.

A hydraulic fluid control valve (HFCV) configured to recirculate an exiting hydraulic fluid from a first hydraulic actuation chamber to a second hydraulic actuation chamber is provided. The HFCV includes a spring well that combines a hydraulic fluid received from a hydraulic fluid pressure source with a recirculated hydraulic fluid from the first hydraulic actuation chamber and delivers the combination to the second hydraulic actuation chamber.

A hydraulic fluid control valve (HFCV) configured to recirculate an existing hydraulic fluid from a first hydraulic actuation chamber to a second hydraulic actuation chamber is provided. The HFCV includes a selectively movable spool assembly having an outer annulus, at least one one-way valve arranged within the outer annulus, and an inner fluid chamber configured to receive and deliver the exiting hydraulic fluid to one or both of either a sump or one of the first or second hydraulic actuation chambers. The at least one one-way valve moves in an axial direction and the outer annulus serves as an axial motion stop for the at least one one-way valve.

A camshaft phaser routes pressurized fluid from a set of chambers that are decreasing in volume to a reservoir. Oscillations of the rotor with respect to the stator create intervals in which the pressure in the reservoir exceeds the pressure in the set of chambers which are increasing in volume. During these intervals, fluid flows from the reservoir, through one-way valves, into the chambers which are increasing in volume. Pressurization of the reservoir increases the volume of flow through the one-way valves, decreasing the pump flow requirement for the camshaft phaser.

A camshaft phaser arrangement configured for a concentric camshaft assembly having inner and outer camshafts is provided. The camshaft phaser arrangement includes a first camshaft phaser, a second camshaft phaser, and a coupling that non-rotatably connects the first camshaft phaser to the concentric camshaft assembly. Each of the camshaft phasers is configured to be connected to either the inner or the outer camshaft. The coupling accommodates for radial and axial offset between the first camshaft phaser and the second camshaft phaser.

A camshaft phaser includes a reservoir cover on a rear side, facing the cams, and a timing wheel on a front side. Fluid is routed from the oil control valve to the reservoir via radial channels defined between a rear cover and a thrust interface. Fluid may also be routed from a radial bearing to the reservoir via these channels. A spool in the oil control valve assembly has an internal passageway to route fluid from a front cavity to the radial channels.

A method of operating a cam shaft phaser including a stator including a radially inwardly extending protrusion, a rotor including a radially outwardly extending protrusion and a slot in the radially outwardly extending protrusion, a cover non-rotatably connected to the stator, a chamber circumferentially bounded by the radially inwardly extending protrusion and the radially outwardly extending protrusion, a pin disposed in the slot, and a first channel connecting the chamber with the slot. The method comprises: blocking, with the locking pin, rotation of the rotor with respect to the stator; applying pulse width modulation voltage to a control valve as a non-rectangular wave form; flowing fluid from the control valve to the chamber; flowing the fluid through the first channel to the slot; axially displacing the locking pin with the fluid; disengaging the locking pin from the cover; and rotating the rotor with respect to the stator.

Temperature independent camshaft phaser actuation strategy

A camshaft phaser arrangement configured for a concentric camshaft assembly having inner and outer camshafts is provided. The camshaft phaser arrangement includes a first camshaft phaser, a second camshaft phaser, a coupling, and at least one timing wheel connected to at least one of the first or second camshaft phaser. Each of the camshaft phasers is configured to be connected to either the inner or the outer camshaft. The coupling includes a coupling ring and at least one coupling pin that torsionally connects the first camshaft phaser to the second camshaft phaser. The coupling provides for radial and axial movement between the first camshaft phaser and the second camshaft phaser.

A camshaft phaser arrangement configured for a concentric camshaft assembly having an inner camshaft and an outer camshaft is provided. The camshaft phaser arrangement can facilitate independent phasing of intake and exhaust valves. The camshaft phaser arrangement includes a first driven wheel and a second driven wheel, both configured to be driven by a driving wheel. A first camshaft phaser is connected to the first driven wheel and configured to be connected to either the inner or outer camshaft. A second camshaft phaser is connected to the second driven wheel and configured to be connected to either the inner or outer camshaft which is not connected to the first driven wheel. A motion transfer assembly can connect the second camshaft phaser to the concentric camshaft assembly. One or both of the camshaft phasers can be an electric camshaft phaser or a hydraulic camshaft phaser.

A cam phasing control motor assembly, including: an electric motor with a hollow drive shaft; an actuating pin passing through the hollow drive shaft; an engagement feature; and a displacement assembly. For a camshaft locking mode: the displacement assembly displaces the actuating pin in a first axial direction to non-rotatably connect the engagement feature with a bolt non-rotatably connected to a camshaft; and the camshaft is arranged to non-rotatably connect to an input gear for a gearbox phasing unit, the input gear arranged to receive torque from an engine. For a phase adjusting mode: the displacement assembly displaces the actuating pin in a second axial direction, opposite the first axial direction, to disconnect the engagement feature from the bolt; and the camshaft is arranged to rotate with respect to the input gear.
