Metalloproteinase inhibitors

Therapeutically active hydroxamic acid derivatives, processes for their preparation, pharmaceutical compositions containing them, and the use of such compounds in medicine. The compounds are inhibitors of metalloproteinases involved in tissue degradation.

Compounds of general formula (II) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and Z are defined in the claims, are matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors.

Compounds of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein n, V, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are as defined in the specification are matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors.

Matrix metalloproteinase inhibiting compounds of formula (I), wherein X is a --CO.sub.2 H or --CONHOH group; and one of the groups proximate to the amide bonds is a steric bulky group, showing enhanced oral absorption. ##STR1##
