A method for heating a blast furnace stove includes combusting a fuel with a lower heating value (LHV) of 9 MJ/Nmor less in a combustion zone which is arranged in a combustion chamber in the stove, and causing the combustion gases to flow through and thereby heat refractory material in the stove. The fuel is combusted with an oxidant including at least 85% oxygen, and combustion gases are recirculated into the combustion zone for diluting the mixture of fuel and oxidant therein sufficiently for the combustion to be flameless.

A method for heating a blast furnace stove includes combusting fuel in a combustion chamber in the stove, providing combustion gases from the combustion chamber to heat refractory material in the stove, recirculating exhausted combustion gases into the combustion chamber, enriching the combustion chamber with oxygen sufficient for maintaining combustion in the combustion chamber without damaging the refractory material in the stove.

Apparatus and method for heating a blast furnace stove

An apparatus for heating a blast furnace stove having a combustion region and a combustion gas outlet associated with the combustion region includes a source of lower calorific value fuel; a first pipeline for supplying the lower calorific value fuel to the combustion region; a source of air; a second pipeline for supplying the air to the combustion region; a source of oxidant comprising at least 85% by volume of oxygen; a third pipeline to supply the oxidant to the combustion region; a fourth pipeline communicating with the combustion gas outlet for conducting combustion gas away from the stove; and a fifth pipeline operable to recirculate combustion gas to the combustion region. The apparatus may operate in different modes according to which of the pipelines are placed in communication with the combustion region.

Heating apparatus

A method of refining a ferroalloy includes the step of blowing molecular oxygen or a gas mixture including molecular oxygen into a melt of the ferroalloy. A metallurgically acceptable particulate material is introduced from above into the melt. The particulate material is carried into the melt in a first supersonic gas jet which travels to the melt shrouded by a second gas jet.

Refining ferroalloys

A method of introducing a solid particulate reagent into a bath of metallurgical liquid comprises a step of introducing a solid particulate reagent into a main supersonic gas jet. The main supersonic gas jet is directed at the surface of the bath and is surrounded with a jet of shrouding gas, preferably of a burning hydrocarbon fluid fuel, provided at a supersonic velocity. The main supersonic gas jet is formed at a velocity which is in the range of minus 10% to plus 10% of the velocity at which the jet of shrouding gas is formed, preferably in the range of Mach 2 to 3.

Injection of solids into liquids by means of a shrouded supersonic gas jet

A metallurgical lance for injecting particulate material into a liquid comprises a main gas tubedefining an axial main gas passage terminating at its outlet and in a first Laval nozzledownstream of the throat of said nozzle. A shrouding gas passage in the form of a combustion chambersurrounds the main gas tube and terminates in a second Laval nozzle. A particulate material transport tubedefines a passage for the particulate material to be introduced into the first Laval nozzledownstream of its throat. The first Laval nozzleis provided with a passagefor the flow of coolant.

Lance for injecting particulate material into liquid metal

A metallurgical lance for introducing gas from above into a volume of metal in a vessel includes a head having at least one ejector formed therein. The ejector includes a Laval nozzle surrounded by a shrouding gas passage. Both the Laval nozzle and the shrouding gas passage communicate at their proximal ends with a common gas supply chamber. The shrouding gas passage communicates with the chamber via a first annular orifice member which determines the percentage split of the gas flow through the chamber between the Laval nozzle and the shrouding gas passage.
