The present disclosure presents techniques for improving operational efficiency of climate control systems. A climate control system may include climate control equipment, a sensor that measures temperature in a building, and a control system that controls operation of the equipment using a first temperature schedule, which associates each time step with a temperature setpoint, when the building is occupied. When not occupied, the control system determines an expected return time based on historical occupancy data associated with the building, determines the temperature setpoint associated with the expected return time, determines candidate schedules each expected to result in the inside air temperature meeting the temperature setpoint, determines efficiency metrics each associated with one of the candidates based on historical performance data resulting from previous operation of the climate control system, and controls operation of the equipment based on a second temperature schedule selected from the candidates based on associated efficiency metrics.

A variable capacity furnace includes a variable capacity fuel valve configured to supply a fuel to a burner, where the variable capacity fuel valve is configured to be controlled to a target setting over a range of settings to modulate an amount or flow rate of the fuel supplied to the burner. The variable capacity furnace also includes a control assembly having processing circuitry and memory circuitry. The memory circuitry includes instructions stored thereon that, when executed by the processing circuitry, cause the processing circuitry to execute a control algorithm to determine, based on whether an indoor temperature is progressing toward a set point over time and based on a temperature differential between the set point and the indoor temperature, a target setting of the variable capacity fuel valve. The instructions also cause the processing circuitry to control the variable capacity fuel valve to the target setting.

The HVAC system may initiate the inducer motor, and receive a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal from the inducer motor, wherein the PWM signal indicates a PWM signal of the inducer motor corresponding to a predetermined airflow pressure of the inducer motor and measured by the pressure sensor. The HVAC system may compare the PWM signal to a baseline value, and control the inducer motor based on the comparing of the PWM signal to the baseline value. The HVAC system may also generate a status notification of the combustion airflow of the HVAC system in response to the comparing the PWM signal to the baseline value.

The system determines that a return signal is not received from the remote sensor. The system obtains a temperature reading from the return air sensor. Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to a controller for a heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system. The processor may also be configured to determine an building efficiency state deviation value based on a difference between an average building efficiency state value of a set of previous building efficiency state values and the current building efficiency state value. The processor may further be configured to determine whether the building efficiency state deviation value satisfies a building inefficiency threshold. The processor may also be configured to provide an indication including an inefficiency status to a device associated with the HVAC system based on a determination that the current building efficiency state satisfies the building inefficiency threshold.
